the law is no protection
as happens in life, my plans for this Winter and the next few years in general have changed quite a bit since I last posted in the
plans iv thread a couple of months ago. new plans follow.
- work at the library for at least two years (I got a full-time position as Senior Technician, which is a position that is split between the IT and Reference departments, and pays significantly better than the full-time position I applied for previously and did not get.)
- pay off whatever loans I have
- save up money to pay for grad school and minimize necessary loans
and since this job is accomplishing nothing I personally care about or want to do in life, the following goals will keep me on track re: things I care about.
- learn Spanish
- study movements for change and relevant people throughout history (I've started a list.) to determine what is the best way for me to effect the change I would like to see in the world
- continue tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays right after work
and just some fun, hobbyish stuff.
- replace the fork & stem on and get hoods/brake levers & two brakes for my fixed gear
- finish my "DIY Planner" (printing the weekly calendar pages is a pain in the butt)
post yours! get motivated!
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
6-month goals (all achievable):
* pay off Honda card. (~ $4k left!)
* buy this bike, and restore it. (
http://www.collectorcarsandbikes.com/disp_pho … hoto=3-6-8 .jpg&s_make=Yamaha&zid=2812&estrt1=0&estop1=10&okey2=f_make )
* have next movie edited and finished
* continue gathering stock footage for my cut-up epic
Tanks vs. Mummies.
* complete script for an adaptation of
Crime and Punishment because Raskolnikov is awesome.

If I do well, I'll be exempt from the final exam :-o
i. get a haircut
ii. get new shoes (wingtips)
iii. get a new suit
iv. get old suits (re)tailored
Classy, nestor.
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
mm tailored suits..
it's annoying because i have one that fits me really well, one that is too small, one that is too large, and one that is black (can't wear at work). so i plan on getting the two poorly fitting ones fixed and at least one or two more.
I don't even have a suit! :o
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
I had to go to a wake last week and hadn't worn my suit for a while. I realized that day that it was missing the middle button (the only one I ever use!) and I didn't have any spares. so I cut off the bottom button (which I was told you are never supposed to use) and sewed it on in the middle with dental floss while riding the subway.
:)
i think appropriate use of the bottom button depends on the type of suit jacket. if it's a two-button jacket, it's better to avoid using the bottom button. but with a three-button jacket, using the bottom one is fine.
nestor probably has knowledge on this
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
yeah, that's what I was hoping :). I think the guy who sold me the jacket told me you always do top and middle or just middle, and NEVER bottom.
asemi has it right on but i tend to only do the middle button on a three.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
yay! I'm glad I've been doing it right. I usually only do middle too.
good to know
i only have two-button jackets
Hahaha... Stupid rules.
yeah they are silly, but if you look at someone with 3 buttons up they look pretty silly :)
two button suits are definitely more in style these days.
I've never noticed the number of buttons on a suit.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Why is the bottom button there if you're NEVER supposed to use it?
for stylistic reasons, i guess
one button suits look really weird

time for an update. old plans:
- work at the library for at least two years in progress
- pay off whatever loans I have payments start next month
- save up money to pay for grad school and minimize necessary loans saving a good bit, but also planning some traveling for this summer
- learn Spanish in progress (haven't worked on this as much as I'd like)
- study movements for change and relevant people throughout history in progress
- continue tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays right after work done until next school year
- replace the fork & stem on and get hoods/brake levers & two brakes for my fixed gear done (hoods on a fixed gear are not that great)
- finish my "DIY Planner" meh @ carrying around a planner
unanticipated accomplishments:
- took the GREs
- talked to an old professor about grad school and a letter of recommendation
new plans:
- work at the library until I start grad school
- apply to Boston College for summer '10 (application due February '10)
- go to Toronto and Houston this summer
- figure out financial aid stuff for grad school (if I get into the program I want the school pays half of your tuition and gives you any other financial aid on top of that; I'm hoping to at least get some low interest student loans that I can use to pay tuition + living expenses while working part-time)
- build a couple of bookshelves to hold my speakers and the piles of books accumulating in my room
I think that's about it! I'm doing ok, just kind of bored with work and having a little trouble motivating myself. this grad school stuff, especially getting the GREs out of the way, is helping a lot though.
For the past years my life has revolved around school. I'd only talk to my friends at school, and never go to any parties. Now that I'm done, I feel sad and miss school. So:
* Get a life outside of academia.
If I get accepted at UiO, I think this will be easy. It's Oslo, so you don't need to own a car to get anywhere. And I'll probably share an apartment with five other people. Currently I'm living out in the country, where everything is far away, and public transportation is a joke. Also, I live with my father and his mother, with whom I have very bad relationships (I haven't talked to any of them for a year probably, and my grandmother is frequently yelling at me). So I'm looking forward to living with new people. :)

phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Maybe I missed this in another thread, but while I know you recently went to Berlin what was your attraction to it? I've known maybe one person that's been there, so I don't really have any notions of what the city is actually like. Just curious.
nny
M̮͈̣̙̰̝̃̿̎̍ͬa͉̭̥͓ț̘ͯ̈́t̬̻͖̰̞͎ͤ̇ ̈̚J̹͎̿̾ȏ̞̫͈y̭̺ͭc̦̹̟̦̭̫͊̿ͩeͥ̌̾̓ͨ
First the logic.
Well the thing is I like BIG cities.
They appeal to what I know, and the things I expect out of life.
Now... pondering a move to europe my logic goes like this.
1. I want a big city.
2. The countries with the strongest economies are Germany, Switzerland, UK, and Scandanavian Countries.
3. I want a country that I can travel to other places from. Scratch norway / sweden / finland.
4. I don't want the UK, because london is too damned expensive, and biking in that city is terrifying.
5. I'd like to learn a new language. German would be easier to learn than dutch or Flemish.
6. I want to travel as I said before. So awesome rail system is a must. Awesome bike environment is a must. Germany has these.
7. I can get tech work in that country that will probably be stable.
8. I know people there, just in case.
So germany rates high on the list.
Berlin is my favorite so far of the few german cities I've been exposed to. It had a much more liberal ( not like US ) environment. People were very chill, less stand offish than elsewhere in the country. And I was reminded a lot of New York to be honest, albeit much more reduced and spread out. But the subway really makes it work.
Also, the pirate party just took 14 seats thanks the berlin folks. And that's a good mark of a citizenry with a desire to effect change at will.
But what it really comes down to is the vibe I guess.
It felt like the sort of place I would like.
Dunno how else to explain that. Others I know who have been there whom are among my friends agreed. So I don't think I am wrong.
The goal moving there would be to see places I've never seen more regularly. And biking all over in europe is way safer and way more fun than I've experienced in the US. Biking in the US is either in a city... or a whole lot of nothing on a road really not that safe to be on because american drivers can be complete jerks to cyclists. This is less true in the west coast, but things are also crazy far apart out here.
In europe you can bike through 3 cities in a day.
It's different and more fun from my experience.
I'd love to spend a few years there doing that.
> The countries with the strongest economies are Germany, Switzerland, UK, and Scandanavian Countries.
really? i don't know much about it lately, but the list is a little surprising.
> I want a country that I can travel to other places from. Scratch norway / sweden / finland.
the ICE train goes from zurich to frankfurt in 4 hours. [
ref] is that not good enough?
i think it's an awesome plan, just reconsider other places. i love the idea of norway.
nny

We were planning a bike tour up to sweden and over to norway this coming summer but pushing that back to 2013. Probably going to do uk / ireland this summer so we can be in town for the olympics. The friend I went riding in london / paris with has a friend in the olympics so we'll try to root for em. Then maybe get him to ride with us around after.
=P I got a friend living in norway right now... my biggest gripe with norway is a six pack of beer costs like 50 euro.
I'm perfectly okay with not having to brew ALL the beer I drink.

i'm working on a new research project that i'm really excited about. i'm trying to measure how fracking affects health outcomes--specifically a case study on the williston basin. it won't be quite the Big Deal that a forthcoming paper by

i mean, look at

asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
that sounds interesting, lucas. how well does a case study measure this type of thing, or are you using additional data as well?
canadiansssss
For some reason I expected something different from a "fucking CV" ... I guess I have a dirty mind ...
i'm using tons of data. i'm calling it a case study because fracking's effects will be different in ND compared to other places, so the external validity will be dubious (probably conservative estimates).
its not a "plan" yet, but a dream.
i have a fair bit saved up (like enough to continue current lifestyle for 10 years without working). i'm mildly considering doing something crazy like taking two years off and going on a huge bike tour around the world.

ps. I still really don't care for capitalism as a system, but I have convinced my soon-to-be co-founders to operate under a cooperative structure, with decisions made democratically, to assuage some of my guilt. lol
Currently working on selling all my stuff to move to New Zealand in two weeks.
I'm making quite a loss on some of this stuff, but I find that I care little. The "I can go anywhere" sense of freedom is quite liberating. I can keep the same job (I've been working remote for the last 2.5 years).
After New Zealand...? Who knows...
phi:
y'all should start a blog asap, and gradually post basic fixes to different things. host on youtube and earn ad revenue from them.
also do reviews of products on the blog. contact manufacturers to get demo units. then after the review, use demo units for spare parts.
alternately, if you ever try to repair a customer's unit, but you inadvertently fubar it, offer them a demo unit for free as an upgrade to whatever they had.
demo units useful.
need a legit blog to get demo units.
make a blog with a few reviews, and 2 new posts per week.
people would also like basic fix videos, and you could easilty make these while doing customers' work. post on youtube for marketing your business as willing to help for free with a video / notoriety as experts / money from ads
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I've been spitballing those very ideas around--save the basic fix videos, might give that a shot.
I don't see this really beginning for at least 6 months or so. We're going to operate purely via word-of-mouth and, essentially, out of the trunk as a trial phase. Person-to-person sales, with emphasis on customer service. idk. We'll see!
cool
another thought then--maybe setup one regular location, even like a table in a small shopping center or something, to at least give you an address to use for listings on google and yelp and stuff. this could even just be a weekly thing, like saturday afternoons. might also help with credibility if people know where they can find you later
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Not a bad idea. Doubt we'd be able to secure a public place to sell for now ... Brenham isn't the friendliest little town. But maybe we could work out a deal with another company that has some space out front.

thanks for the congrats :))). being married to someone I love is pretty cool! also having a fixed mortgage payment without the prospect of never-ending rent increases.
Bali sounds awesome!!! quitting jobs is great. I've been at my job for almost 3 years now which is the longest I've been at a single job since I shelved books at a library in high school. it's weird but there's a lot of change all the time and my new (as of ~1 year ago) boss is really great so that's a good reason to stick around.
congrats asemi!
i have a girlfriend, but i'm still paying rent :(
Haven't had a job since Feb last year; kinda running out of savings at the moment; I always figured I would be able to get a job if I needed to, but this whole corona thing might make that a bit harder than planned :-/
Having a good job is cool asem; I found it's actually quite rare. I stayed at my last job for 3 years, and the first year was amazing, after that things slowly went downwards, and at the end I was so burned out I simply couldn't write a single line of code any more.
I do have a €25k grant, so not in any immediate financial troubles; I'm currently working on
https://www.goatcounter.com , which should hopefully give me enough income to sustain myself after the 25k runs out (currently getting about €200/month, which is not really enough; but on the other hand, I haven't done much in advertising either yet, so should have the potential if I do things right and am lucky enough.
Still in Bali, which is not necessarily the best place to be atm; their first response to covid-19 was that it won't affect Indonesia as they pray a lot and God will protect them. That was the health minister. Things have gotten a little bit better since, but not by much.
But packing up all your stuff and moving somewhere else is easier said than done; I already paid my rent for the next 6 months, so I'd lose that, I have a girlfriend here, and also not really a clear place to go.
Have kinda mixed feelings about living here anyway, so will probably go somewhere else once my year's rent is up in November; not 100% sure where yet, but been looking at Tallinn, Prague, Antwerp (EU has big advantage because I don't need to jump through visa-shaped hoops). Also have a friend in Vietnam who's been trying to convince me to get over there, but not sure how I feel about that. Well, we'll see what happens...
hm.. interesting. thanks for the update.
sucks it hit shortly after you got there
*shrug* it is what it is. I actually feel a bit more positive about it than 4 weeks ago. The situation is Bali is mostly okay and while most of my friends left, I've been dating a few people which is kind of my social life now (perhaps not the healthiest thing, but ah well...)

glad to hear you're alright, arun, and hopefully have avoided COVID so far. the US is just letting omicron rip right now (but maybe we're over the peak of it?). it's pretty wild.
