do you like pelican cases, or do you prefer an alternative brand?

amazon sells the pelican 1020 ($10), 1040 ($13), and 1050 ($14) for dirt cheap.

i'm thinking about getting one to STORE my fragile camera gear.

We always used Pelican cases on set back in school. Loved that stuff.

This post makes me want to get one of the microcases for phone, et al, while on my bike.

i'm looking for an inexpensive, durable tool box with dimensions of about (16" x 8" x 8").

amazon is showing me items like these:
waterloo hp2051 ($17)
waterloo hm1930 ($20)
homak rd00119819 ($31)

i know these aren't going to be the best tool boxes ever, but do you think the waterloo hm1930 would be decent?

What kind of tools are you storing?

revision: Regardless, get a solid, metal toolbox with drawers rather than just a single compartment. Makes organization a breeze and keeps your tools from getting banged up.

Yeah, go with drawers. Most toolboxes have a large compartment on top that would suffice for masks and gloves and the like.

really? i don't have that much, and they're cheap tools too. i'll consider drawers, but i'd prefer cheap and simple(r).

Well, if you aren't worried about it then a solid, lidded container should be fine.

if you include the price of a "pick and pluck foam insert" for the case, the total costs become:
1020 -- $16.30
1040 -- $17.03
1050 -- $18.51

i'm going to buy a 1040 with free amazon prime shipping. it should hold my auxiliary macro lens and three rolls of 135 film nicely. i really need a good case for my auxiliary lens. (it cost more than my camera, which gets a 15" domke f34m .)

i think that a metal tool cabinet with drawers would indeed be nice, but i'd want a high-quality one with ball bearing drawers. very sturdy ones cost a couple hundred dollars. and i don't want to buy a low-quality cabinet. it'll just piss me off. plus my current small set of tools are low-quality, anyway. someday i'll get a nice cabinet and nice tools to go inside of it.

so looking at tool boxes, i've decided to go with plastic, as long as i can find a sturdy one. i'm afraid that in the box format, the metal would get scratched quickly.

most of the plastic boxes are flimsy--they flex and contort easily. however, i found one really basic one that seems very sturdy. it's the plano 20" 651d. it costs $15 at a local hardware store. it is similar to this and this . i can't find the 651d online anywhere. i guess i'll buy it locally and take pictures.

i got the plano 651d on tuesday. i like it a lot. i even put my datacom tools into it. then i bought a small plano utility box (it's like a tackle box), and i put all my jacks and staples and things into it. :D

i got the pelican 1040 on friday. it holds my auxiliary macro lens and three rolls of 135 film nicely.

pictures soon!
