It's a great day because I don't have class till 2, I've got all my readings done for all my classes, and I've even been studying a little bit every day for a test on wednesday (I'm gonna fuckin ace that shit).
Today is a good day because at the Publishing department meeting, I was recognized for stepping up and helping shoot the last 2 days. The meeting was good because we only talked about the positive things that we have been improving upon for the last 4 months. I actually enjoy meetings at work.

My first project will be making a box that triggers some cameras at precisely the same moment. The cameras will be used for taking pictures of the same object from different angles, so the pictures they take should be of the object at the same instant.
The cameras can be triggered over Ethernet, but network latencies vary so much that the cameras get their signals up to several milliseconds different from each other.

Maybe use a light indicator. Most DSLRs accept IR control now... directional laser bursts at range should work. (red lasers in infrared range).

hung out with a kid I tutor. his mom asked me if I'd be willing to do a Big Brother-esque thing with him. I assume it doesn't do POE then. But you can trigger the cameras off of ethernet if you wish. You don't need to use the second port. I have a new duvet coming in the mail (early birthday present!) and they kindly did not just abandon it on my steps. They tried once...came back the next day and tried again...and are coming back a third time, tomorrow!
I could just pick it up at the sorting center, but I like our UPS guy (and my down insert needs a washing anyway) so I'm just going to wait.

I am wandering outside my apt when I lived in the bronx. Just had a pleasant lunch. Decided to call fedex to ask why a package hadn't been delivered yet. They kindly informed me that my address did not exist. So we confirmed my address. They say "the driver could not find the building". I respond, "Well seeing as how the building takes up a square city block I find it difficult to believe that he could not find it." To which he responds "well the address is not in our system." At this point I am nearing the entrance to my building and low and behold I see a fedex truck stopping to deliver packages. So I pull the fedex guy over and tell him to explain to the fedex people on the phone that the address exists. Good times.
Next is from a friend and slightly better...
My friend Nate works for a telco. Their datacenter is right across the street from fedex. They order a large device super rush delivery. They pay them extra to ensure they are the first delivery of the day. So they are expecting and waiting for the delivery. They watch as trucks start leaving the fedex depot... none come their way. They trickle to a stop... no more trucks are leaving. None have come to them. So they call fedex. Fedex responds "Our driver is having difficulty finding your location." So he says "Okay go to your window. You see that guy jumping up and down and waving... that's me." They shortly dispatch a truck from the facility to drive their box across the street.

yeah fedex drivers are pretty stupid. while in butte, i witnessed one of the drivers park his truck on a hill, not put on the parking brake, and jump out and deliver a package. needless to say the truck started drifting backwards towards a busy street. he just threw the package down, busted ass for the truck and luckily got the parking brake on right as it hit the sidewalk.

In Dutchland I can just opt to pick the package up at the post office ... We don't use FedEx though, we have TNT.
It wasn't once, it was twice in a row, and those two times were the only times I've had Fedex deliver packages to me in Bozeman. So their fail rate with me here is 100%.

funny story about one of the fedex drivers in bozeman. nick was his name. he went out and bought a glock. first night of owning it he was practicing taking it apparent but didn't think to make sure that there wasn't a round in the chamber. well, i'm sure you can guess what happened next. gun misfires, and hits him in the leg.

I don't see how that's an entirely outrageous opinion. A safety just prevents accidental firings while handling the gun, if you're a responsible person then a safety isn't a necessity 99% of the time. (Though, personally, I'd rather have a safety than not.)

i mean there in theory could be a bad powder batch that was severely unstable for whatever reason. also anything that could act as a firing pin, or jar the firing pin could cause a misfire. heat might be able to do it, but it would probably require some sort of weird circumstances to generate that much heat.

Well, at some stage, I don't quite remember when, but it's at least 8 or 9 years back now, I decided to come up with a name I could pretty much guarantee would be available on any service/forum/etc. I registered at, by combining two unrelated words - I settled on Psychedelic Squid.
Since then (maybe 2 or 3 years ago, this time), I joined an IRC channel where it was considered common courtesy to have a short nick, for ease of typing, hence Psychedelic Squid became simply PSquid. And I generally found I prefered that, so I tend to use that when I can get it, or the full name if I can't.

I think red/green highlighting could be done without making it ugly by going with a paler green and a paler red (for example, #00FF7F and #FF6347, aka CSS standard colours 'springgreen' and 'tomato', or some such pair) so that they don't stick out so much.

I helped with the whole drywall process and did all the painting, as well as some of the carpentry because he wanted to knock down a few walls. This was all mainly on the second floor, but I painted the bottom floor as well (which is where I'll be living if it doesn't sell come May). I also did a lot of the landscaping, too.
And I've usually done all the maintenance and improvements at my mom's as well. Except the burst pipe ... I don't know much plumbing, aside from toilets, sinks, and tubs.
As for enjoying it ... I don't really enjoy the actual work involved, but I enjoy taking care of myself and my property for the most part.

That's pretty cool. What level of carpentry were you doing? I've always wanted to get more into woodworking and furniture construction; working raw materials into something functional and (hopefully) attractive is very appealing. rode my motorcycle on the highway! fastest I went was 80. it was terrifying and exhilarating. once you pass like 65 you can feel the wind wanting to rip you right off the bike and you kind of have to hold on for dear life.

First day of training was today ... part of the training involves them giving you a Reseller package for two months and registering a domain name of your choice, good for a year. All for free. So once my reseller account lapses, or I just cancel it, I have my own domain name for the self-sufficiency project my land-lord and I are planning... so I got the aptly named selfsufficienttech.com. Haha.

It's not bad. I do two things I don't really like doing professionally: dealing with people, and working with computers. But it's a good enough work environment for me to overlook those pet peeves. Plus there's already talk of advancing me, so that's cool.
I am discovering that I am getting better and better at spotting bullshit. The problem is, I don't play the political game with people. and the end result is me continually calling people on their bullshit to the point that they stop inviting me to their meetings.... about stuff i am involved in... which inevitably results in chaos.... and now those same people are scambling to cover their asses because they ran head long into reality. And here I am basically sitting here fielding calls consisting of "Yeah that's absolutely wrong." "Who the hell told you that?" and "Well yeah, that deadline will never be met. It's not a matter of effort, it's actually impossible.... breaking it down..."

just got home from the Oregon Country Fair. It was a pretty good time I guess, considering how large it is, and how many times my bag was searched. I was mostly there for the food stalls and tried to sample as many as I could. I loved a lot of what I ate, especially the vegetarian meals (the majority of what I ate)
the people watching was also pretty awesome. great costumes and body painting. Finally busted out my hasselblad for this event and I found a handful of un-used 120 film a few days before! I got stopped by a lot of folks at the fair wanting to see the camera and it was cool to let people look through the viewfinder :D

Researching sockets in C#/.NET ... decided to go ahead and take up my landlord on his offer to pay me to write some code. If it works (stressing the IF here) well, he said he'd hire me to write more server-side code and pay me "very well" ... hopefully it works well.

set up on site interview dates for netronome and cert. Also finished my presentation on MPLS and MS-PW for the cert interview.
Got an offer from Netronome for a Software Test Engineer position and cert apparently is interested in me enough to run a background check and reference check on me for the Security Test Engineer position. So good news on that front. Never thought I would be in a position to have to choose between two jobs that I know I would love to do.
I'm on a roll but I accepted the offer from Netronome. Staying in Pittsburgh.

I don't want to be working their, but apparently they pay pretty decently and it's part-time (at least Wal-Mart's definition of part-time ... anything less than 32 hours per week) so hopefully it won't consume my life. :(

Spent Saturday/Sunday out in the woods sleeping in my diy/makeshift bedsheet hammock and my dad's old cot bug net (with a tarp when it started to rain). Cooked over a fire and carved a functionaly bamboo calligraphy dip pen out of some river cane for the girl.

I just came back from 5 days in the middle of the pineywoods of East Texas. 20 miles from the nearest anything. Surrounded by coyotes, some bears, and millions of spiders. It was awesome. Slept in my DIY hammock every night, except one I slept under the stars by the long fire. Me and a friend set traps and snares around a few animal runs to no avail, but it was a fun skill-share anyway. My new pack handled bush-whacking like a champ... still looks brand new. I should invest in a tarp with a 12' ridgeline, though. 10' was cutting it really close in the storm, but I stayed perfectly dry. Sorry for the ramble, I'm excited!

yeah but we (the fiance and I) think it could work out pretty well. big old Victorian house on the Pittsburgh north side. 2800 sq/ft with a lot size close to 5000 sq/ft. No one has lived in it for at least a year so it needs a good amount of work but luckily the list price is dirt cheap, 31k (we will be aiming to get it for less).
With our down payment and potential appraisal post rehab we should easily surpass 20% equity on the property after the contractors finish up. So if the cards all fall right I could potentially get rid of the MIP after only 6 months by refinancing into a traditional mortgage which would be fucking sweet!
Who knows though, we got a couple of contractor bids on the way in the next couple of days so as long as they are in the ball park of our rehab budget we will put in an offer before christmas.

my now fiancé and i have bought 5 houses in lansing, michigan for between 11k and 23.4k. i would say it has been successful as far as a decent financial investment. though i have another friend who bought 3 houses in grand rapids similarly priced and has not found the return to be very good at all. the biggest issue seems to be one of crime.
even if you buy a house for dirt cheap if you have to worry about it getting broken into every night you go out then you are going to feel pretty crappy after a year or so. but as far as i can tell there does not seem to be a strong connection between crime and price since the same priced homes in lansing have had almost no crime issues in 3 years. best bet as far as i can figure is to buy the crappiest house on an otherwise decent street.
as for the comment of only buying a home in which you intend to live in. probably not a bad idea though if you want a home which has decent return on rental value then buying a cheap house seems to be a good idea. strangely I can rent a 15k house for $800 per month while my mom is renting a 200k condo in bozeman, mt for $1000 per month.

you probably have to deal with delinquency a lot more than she does, which is probably part of the reason that your tenants aren't simply buying their own homes (bad credit). or am i wrong?

lucas: not sure what the average with delinquency is. seems like you can undercut the market by charging $50 less or so a month and be more selective about who you rent to. as for credit, i think there is an issue with despite there being many cheap homes a lot of people did not choose to take advantage of them because 1. people are myopic and if "everybody" is loosing money on homes then only the brave person who has a decent grasp of numbers is going to think to buy a home and 2. many people are living barely beyond one pay check to another because they have a combination of low income relative to expenses and/or they do not know how to save money and 3. a lot of agents say that banks do not want to give out home loans for less than 50k. i think most banks are set up to charge thousands of dollars just to set up a loan for a client with 500 being around a typical amount banks will charge just to give you a quote for a home loan. thus a lot of homes in this price category are unfinanceable. in this case people like me must rely upon informal credit (borrowing money from parents, friends, etc.).

today I signed a lease for a grossly inexpensive studio apartment barely outside of boston and a ~8 minute walk to the subway and also got offered a job administering the network for a large-and-growing company in the same city with a 20k pay bump. today was a good day.

I hope so too! it's certainly more straight-laced as far as culture (ties, salesbros, drug tests) but I'm dying to not have to touch Windows every day.
I could never wear a tie to work (hell, I don't even own one. I don't dress as classy as the rest of you). And while I don't do drugs, I'm not sure if I would submit to a drug test either (no one does that in Europe, anyway, it's such an American thing). Would you pass such a test btw? Last I recall, you enjoyed the occasional joint...

Man, I've only had two jobs that didn't make me do a UA. It makes you feel like a criminal. Fingerprinting, UA, legal documents ... then that fucking wait for the sample to get to the lab, get tested, and the results sent to HR at the company, which then gives it over to the GM at the store. Oh... and if you test positive for anything? Remember all those forms? One of them says they can't legally give you another UA for TWELVE MONTHS. So when you fail, even if it's for something just really stupid or a prescription you forgot to disclose or whatever, they shrug and say they understand but can't do another test ... shit outta luck.

Yeah .... most UAs are really simple and can be bypassed by merely diluting your urine enough to through off PPM or whatever scale they use. If you can fool a drug test by drinking 2L of water on your way to the test, it can't be that useful.

Forgot the encryption passphrase to one of my harddrives. But since I keep per-directory shell histories, I could see that it only contained backups of files that were still available at other places.

I read a random weblog page, and in the comments someone linked to a page on my weblog(!)
I was rather surprised, since all I do is write stuff occasionally and put it online (I don't "advertise" it).

I dumpstered a Sony FS210 HD-CRT and a Sony 100Wx5 A/V receiver (from the SAME dumpster, too) a few weeks ago. The other night I got some free time to sit and work on them. Under an hour later I have a 36" CRT set with a pristine HiScan display and a full blown 5.1 receiver working just fine.
I hope that I find some bookshelf/floor 2- or 3-way speakers at some point. A 100% free home theater is too tantalizing to pass up. Fuck 4K and fuck Dolby Atmos. A solid 2.1 setup is plenty sufficient for quality audio anyway. And ain't nothing better than Trinitron aperture grilles, either. It's sexy.
I also lucked into a Eminence Beta 15A loudspeaker ... no enclosure, just the speaker. Thing is rated for 300W-RMS(600W peak) and frequency response tends to drop <100Hz (so it wouldn't be sufficient for a sub) ... maybe I'll take the hit and buy another and have matching 15" mid-ranges. Pair with some high-output supertweeters and I would have an amazing setup that would rival the 6-plex theater in town, lol.
Although that receiver couldn't power such a setup. I would need a minimum of ~330W per channel. That's a tad excessive. Anyone know any reasonable power amplifiers for such a feat?

This all kind of got started because I wanted my own HiFi setup for music but couldn't afford a half-way (or even quarter-way) decent setup.
As for the paired 15" mid-ranges... I could buy single board amplifiers & xovers and simply have powered speakers, rather than relying on a centralized stereo amplifier that can handle that load. Then I could just use some line-level buffer/op-amp circuit to provide the signal. I could even handle the subwoofer HPF there so the mid-ranges would never even see <200Hz. That'd be cool.
But damn, that'd probably all end up costing $200-$300.
Maybe I'll do a time/cost-analysis on DIY speakers from salvaged parts vs buying the components outright.
EDIT: So, building from scratch w/ pre-made XO boards, total cost would be $145.64 ... this is for everything minus wood (I have access to a wide variety of OBS and plywood at work), felt (if I want to felt the enclosures), and speaker grille cloth.
Building the XO boards myself would be marginally cheaper, to the point that the time spent constructing them wouldn't be worth it.
So I'm gonna hold out and see if I can salvage some discarded speakers.

music setups!!! I've never fucked with surround setups for tv/movies/whatever but I have some vintage klh model 22 speakers at home hooked up to a yamaha cr-620 receiver and a technics sl-1500 turntable and it's dope for music listening. I've been getting into repairing the stuff too (replaced a couple of capacitors on the turntable recently and bought a non-working yamaha cr-440 to repair/probably replace all the capacitors on for practice).

haha, well, analog television and resolution don't go together very well ... but that's the theoretical maximum resolution, I suppose. It probably scans just under 1080 lines per frame(2 fields of 540 ... NTSC standard has 525 lines total, so it may do some trickery here), and then somewhere around 853 deflection wires in front of the phosphors.
It's plenty sharp (though there are some slight geometry issues in the top corners that should be fixable via service menu) and reminds me why I was so against flat screens for so many years. I'm getting old and snobbish, but for movies and TV a CRT is way nicer.
If only I had a (functional) 35mm projector ... *sigh*
