today at target, i looked at all of the household cleaners. it seems that all of the cleaners use one of the three following detergents:
* sodium hypochlorite (NaClO)
* ammonia (NH3)
* butyl glycol (C6H14O2)

luckily you can buy generic bleach or ammonia, then simply dilute it as necessary for most needs.

formula 409 contains the last chemical listed, along with eo (a carcinogen), deg , edta , and lye (respective of the msds sequence).

window cleaners are usually diluted ammonia.

bathroom cleaners are usually diluted sodium hypochlorite (soft scrub adds calcium carbonate as an abrasive).

never combine sodium hypochlorite and ammonia.

yeah, if you want to kill yourself.

If you know how dangerous chlorine gas is to humans (it was used as a chemical weapon during World War I and later by Nazi Germany in World War II), this will be very apparent.

more:

Chlorine is a toxic gas that irritates the respiratory system. Because it is heavier than air, it tends to accumulate at the bottom of poorly ventilated spaces. Chlorine gas is a strong oxidizer, which may react with flammable materials.

Chlorine is detectable in concentrations of as low as 1 ppm. Coughing and vomiting may occur at 30 ppm and lung damage at 60 ppm. About 1000 ppm can be fatal after a few deep breaths of the gas. Breathing lower concentrations can aggravate the respiratory system, and exposure to the gas can irritate the eyes.

Chlorine's toxicity comes from its oxidizing power. When chlorine is inhaled at concentrations above 30ppm it begins to react with water and cells which change it into hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hypochlorous acid (HClO).

Or if you enjoy learning things by trying things. I could have created chlorine gas by incorrectly mixing my mordancage chemicals, but I did it anyway because I was curious about the process and suspected I could follow directions correctly.

you don't learn if you die in the process.

Very true!

Then again, you don't learn much if you're unwilling to risk anything.
