does anyone else ever get the irrational desire to downgrade all of their technological possessions?

every once in a while I want to buy a Thinkpad, use OpenBSD + Ion, keep all of my contacts written in an address book, and go back to using my Motofone. then when I do any of these things I am always seduced by newer technologies about six months later. I probably spend way too much time thinking about this.

the grass is always greener, or something.

i used to go back and forth.

but now that my primary goal is to minimize the amount of physical object i have, i value technology highly. i can store 5,000 pages of class notes on an sd card! i doubt i'll be getting nostalgic anytime soon.

what about the issues of backup and data lifetime? buy a new sd card every five or ten years? upgrade storage medium every five or ten years? this is why I kind of hate technology; it seems like there is a lot of waste. but maybe it is better than paper?

I, like larz, prefer minimization to downgrading.

well, yeah, i wouldn't rely on an sd card for data storage. it's just an extreme example of compact digital storage.

i use multiple hard drives and aws s3 for backups.

phone successfully downgraded. have decided to keep master list of phone numbers/addresses in Address Book on my MacBook and have manually entered all numbers into my Motofone. I'm feeling it.

with a ThinkPad on the way, I am now presented with the question of what to do with my addresses. right now they are in Address Book on my Mac. maybe I'll go back to writing all of them down in a binder or something. I kind of hate that it wouldn't be backed up though. I could use an address book/contacts program in BSD or something, I suppose, but I feel like that's overkill. text file?
