I prefer to keep things freeware or open source if possible. I just post photos online. Working with photos is mainly only fulfilling with the camera for me, but when I have some command line tools or apps for specific purposes I tend to have a good time learning and experimenting that way. One thing I'm not too interested in is spending a lot of time doing digital post production stuff in terms of image manipulation, at least not with this set up.

I'm interested in whatever software you may have used, or currently use.

previously:
workflow
-lightroom (sorting, choosing images, crops, and filtering)
-irfanview (batch renaming, resizing)
-flickr uploadr

specialty
-camera control
-combineZ
-photomontage

recently:
workflow
-picasa (sorting)
-irfanview (batch renaming, resizing)

future:
Raw editing
-RawTherapee

command line based
-dcraw
-exiftool

the law is no protection
Preview.app to view, edit, delete, etc.
Finder.app to organize
Flickr website or scp to upload

:)

I've tried using programs like iPhoto and Picasa (there's a Mac version in beta now!) but they're usually just overkill for me. I don't have a terribly consistent photo/image organizing scheme anyway. if I have some photos from an event I will create a dated directory for that event. if it's a miscellaneous photo I'll put it in misc or another appropriate folder.

adobe photoshop lightroom
i use it for adjusting temp, tint, brightness, contrast, vibrance, and blacks. then i use it to save as jpeg.

irfanview
i use it for batch resizing and batch renaming.

that's all i ever do. no cropping, no photoshop business.

I wish Preview was better at photo editing. it used to not be able to resize which was the biggest pain in the ass. then they added that capability in Leopard. now all I want is batch editing and the ability to rename files from within the program. right now I have to look at which filenames pertain to which photos and then go rename them in Finder. it's kind of stupid since there is already a list of all the images you have open right in Preview.

New workflow:

1. Take pictures.
2. Import pictures to archive with zimg (pictures are sorted into year/month/day directories).
3. Backup archive to euterpe.
4. (Manipulate pictures.)
5. Sort pictures with GQview's sort function (copies them to a Mercurial repository).
6. (Add picture.txt files with titles and descriptions.)
7. Add, commit and push changes to wlw.

On wlw, there's a crontab entry which checks for changes in the Mercurial repository every five minutes. If there are any, it runs a script that updates this gallery: http://ciew.wingedleopard.net/pics/

I like this a lot more than my database based system where you have to add pictures with a web browser, typing your password for each picture, and waiting for each picture to upload before you can add the next.

UFRaw for RAW processing and then Gimp for the extra work, if any. Then upload them to flickr if I like the pic.

I've been playing with RawTherapee and Rawstudio for the past couple of days and I like them more than UFRaw. Rawstudio is lighter on memory compared to RawTherapee. So I might replace UFRaw with Rawstudio. If you have more than 1GB of RAM, then LightZone is a good tool.
