I'm going to travel around Europe by train this summer. Anyone else doing the same thing?

yeah. I remember rail passes being quite expensive for non-Euros relative to discount airlines (Ryan Air, etc.). But then you need to factor in extra time and ticket (non-trivial cost in my experience) to get from the airfield to a rural area.

sounds pretty bad. Andy got a round trip ticket for around 5-600 from Chicago to Germany. but, shrug. all about wtp? but he had a lot more time to look for deals. i bet if you rented a car and drove the same distance it would be at most 700 in total for shared transportation costs. not to bash your train plans, just presenting reasonable alternatives.
I don't have a licence nor a car. Also, I'd like to sleep while I travel.

Yeah but you get the possibility to visit more with a car rather than just passing on a Train. Also you can pick your own route.

my perception is that while trains are cool. cars are generally faster and more convenient. eat where you want to eat, go where you want to go, take the money you save in sleep in a hotel or hostel rather than on some train. in the three months I had a eurorail pass I found the ticket more confining than liberating. i could have done so much other kinds of traveling with that money. besides, trains and train stations are kind of boring once you get past the novelty of them.
anyways, I don't see a reason to buy a open ended rail pass when you know your route. I am pretty sure you pay a premium for the freedom. i bet if you bought a specific set of tickets IN ADVANCE for the rout you are going to take you would save at least $300.

Also, because you have specific days that you want to travel you are going to be confined to the rates you can find on those days rather than having an open agenda that you could use to search for the best deal. It might not be a bad idea to look for flights to Oslo and see if you can get a better rate and just stay with bluet until departing. probably more enjoyable if you didn't have to deal with jet lag (but then again you will probably not find it anything new switching from a night schedule to a day schedule or visa versa)

oh yeah, I have heard that if you wait to the 1.5-3 week advance window that you can find just about the best deals on flights. i never have had the stomach to wait till then if I have a specific destination and time frame.

unfortunately, i think i better stay here and work on my thesis. i was planning on getting off of my continent upon completing my degree. if i left now for a few weeks, i feel like i'd be pushing my thesis work back to a detrimental point.

After staying with Maxlor, I went to Budapest. There I met these two Norwegian commies (one of them might get into the parliament this fall. We saw a communist memorial in Budapest, and then we went to Prague. They're probably on their way to Berlin right now. I'll stay here in Prague for one more night before going to Berlin.
