I didn't do much research on this so I went with the suggestion of a bike shop dude and got one of these:

I'm a bit worried about the lock, but I think this setup is sufficient for my bike.

that one looks wicked cheap. those insane chains are only necessary if you like live in nyc and lock your bike up outside all the time. a normal u-lock from onguard or kryptonite suffices otherwise.

It doesn't seem like the mini U locks work in very many situations. In the image he has there it's only around his wheel and the post. Maybe I should just try to play around with one though.

maybe this?

People tend to buy the big clunky U-locks because they don't know how to use them properly. A U-lock should go around the rear rim and tire, somewhere inside the rear triangle of the frame. There is no need to loop it around the seat tube as well, because the wheel cannot be pulled through the rear triangle.

as long as your front wheel isn't quick-release, this is a pretty solid method. if you really want to secure both wheels then you can get a cable to loop through the front one.

oh i wasn't paying enough attention to what "inside the rear triangle" means.

i just had in my mind that with a U-lock, limiting the range of motion for leverage attacks seems important.

my front tire is quick release so i'd need a cable, maybe i'll exchange the knox lock for that one :]

lookin' good, lr.

I've got a kryptonite mini, no cable. if someone wants to carry around a wrench and take my front wheel they are more than welcome.

it's a little more annoying when I'm out with my road bike and I have to lock up somewhere. I usually have to remove the front wheel and lock up both wheels with my u-lock, which is a challenge sometimes, depending on what I'm locking up to.

I don't even know if you can purchase them individually. I was using my road bike around town mostly when my fixed was out of commission; now things should be back to normal :).

though the effect of riding my road bike around a lot is that I want to go to a WAY lower gear ratio on my fixed now.

I returned my fat chain for the mini bulldog. The bike shop didn't supply a cable, it didn't come with the package. I had to buy that Akita cable separately for $10 :( I would have liked to purchase on amazon but I need the lock today. Hope my front wheel isn't much desired. Oh well I'm parking in the lockers on campus mainly for now.
