i really don't see the point in using linux if windows has all the software and games i need and the stability.
however i would like a distro of linux for my pendrive for use at school, i'm trying 'slax' atm, is it any good?

imo linux has turned to a complex mess of hot garbage. i don't know why everyone that uses linux wants to take over the world with it and wants everyone including their grandmother to use it. who cares. in their gui simiplifications they are making other basic tasks so much more complex. what happened to plain text files!? thank god for the bsd's.
I also hate windows though. Vista makes me want to punch my monitor.

the RC of 7 has been a relative pleasure to use!
the point of using Linux is if you want to use a Unix system (to learn about it, because you prefer the stability or lack of malware, because you just like it better, whatever) that has slightly better software support than any of the BSDs (stuff like 3D acceleration, games, cutting edge network drivers [actually I think FreeBSD can do a lot of this], or maybe an easy install process).

Asemi: Definte "cutting edge network drives"
ZFS support was built on solaris, which obviously is not a Linux. This is pretty fuckin' cutting edge. Now if you are speaking about SANs or Network appliances, then yes, I would have to say Linux has better support. However, BSD is pretty fuckin' close.
I really hate Linux, especially RHEL(I am an RHCE so fuck off. It's not me being elitist or anything like that). The thing with computing is that people will gravitate towards the OS that best matches their needs.
My sever needs are well handled by FreeBSD. Router needs are handled by OpenBSD(PF, gotta love it). I really have no use for a Linux system. I use Mac OS X as a desktop system. I have no windows machines in production.
However, you do have to account the vast amount of software that Windows has to offer. It is because of this that I choose to run Windows in a VM. I need RDP access to test shit outside of my work's network. I need these Windows VMs to run router sims. I need .. wah wah you get the point. Use the OS you need.
Linux sucks. :) Although I must say, KVM is something I am looking forward to. Linux and Virtualization is the way to go.

I used windows 7 for like two days and couldn't stand it. windows is such a mess.
Yeah. Just like Linux.

linux is just less of a mess! gnome is like a hundred times better than using windows if you don't care about playing games or using the latest 3d graphics drivers or something.

with the exception of fucking network manager...
Yeah, the gnome network manager is just a complete piece of shit.
> linux is just less of a mess!
I don't know ... For starters Linux has this faint smell of UNIX and every time I use it I expect it to behave as UNIX ... And get disappointed time and time again in some shitty way. With Windows at least you know it's a different beast.
The last week orso I spent struggling with a RAID-5 mdadm array: this just plain sucks.
I'm not even going to begin with the LVM crap I had to take on top of that, and my previously good opinion of XFS has taken a serious hit.
I am reminded by the lord of the rings. As you may recall, Gandalf mentions that Orcs are created in mockery of the Elves, and the Trolls in mockery of the Ents ... Well, Linux is created in mockery of UNIX ...

That being said... windows doesn't have strace... doesn't have usable logging... and doesn't have gdb / lsof / a myriad of necessary SIMPLE command sets.
That OS, is just plain dumb.
LVM is awesome.
I never said windows is perfect, just that I prefer it over Linux as a desktop OS ...

things that bother me most about a windows desktop: finding drivers, finding decent software for stupid shit like taking a webcam photo in the sea of freeware crap, and when you are trying to do some stupid trivial thing like change if menus fade in or not it's buried in some tab in system properties.
with each new version it just continually feels like they are tacking things on top of the same operating system from however many years ago and not getting rid of anything.
I have to find, download, and install zero drivers on ubuntu; there is virtually always solid, free, open source software for anything I could conceivably want to do; and configuring mostly any aspect of gnome is usually very straightforward.
i share linux/windows sentiments with carpetsmoker, with the exception of windows 7.
LVM is awesome.
Is LVM awesome?
