audiophilia is absurd. that is all.

some of it is totally stupid and for rich dorks who have nothing better to obsess about. some of it is cool to an extent.

i.e., it is pretty much like everything else
the gimmicks are dumb, but in the end it's just taste
mostly i'm just frustrated that all i can afford is not considered very respectable in the community.
i think you can probably afford respectable gear, if you don't mind using headphones.

just get some vintage shit
And mod it!
http://www.referenceaudiomods.com/ has some great stuff, like these previously mentioned $ 485 volume knobs:

nice vintage speakers can be had on craigslist, but I think they might be easier to find in new england because a lot of the companies who made them were based around here. vintage receivers are easy to find on ebay. I can give you brands/models to look for if you're interested.

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Best audio I ever heard was on my friend's father's Naim setup. Vinyl + Naim = ftw.
i've got some dumb shit like that. i love my setup, but if i didn't inherit 90% of the stuff in it, i would never buy the same stuff
Those volume knobs and power cords look like bullshit to me ... Buying a bag of sand would probably be more useful.
i'd build a faraday cage of 1cm of solid copper to put around the audio components.
I'd go to an actual concert.
that's all hi-fi is meant to do, muahaha
what do you guys know about power conditioning (voltage regulation, filtering, &c) with respect to audio equipment?
drop some knowledge on me, please!
i got a power filter because in my house there were serious issues. flipping light switches in the proximity of my stereo caused popping noises, etc.
awesome! sound effects!
