Wtf?
don't want any piracy
yeah, made sense to me.

I think it's ridiculous.
i think pixar is ok with the gesture costing them thousands, but not millions.

Actually there's only one DVD. AT ALL. IN THE WORLD.

Her family isn't going to sell copies of it. Especially not after the article on them having it.
Besides, it's not like it's hard to sneak video cameras into theaters.
> Her family isn't going to sell copies of it.
maybe not. but a cousin might want to borrow it to "watch" it.
> Besides, it's not like it's hard to sneak video cameras into theaters.
which yields a less-than-optimal quality product.
Regardless, they took the time to go -- They could have said fuck them, not our problem.

The people who download pre-dvd-release rips of movies aren't the ones who are going to be picky about quality. :)
I just think it's pointlessly attention-garnering considering how many ripped off versions there are on the internet already. And how many thousands more there will be after the initial public release to dvd.

Actually pixar has still not even commented on the story. If the family hadn't said something no one would have ever known.
> The people who download pre-dvd-release rips of movies aren't the ones who are going to be picky about quality.
perhaps, but people who download dvd rips may be picky. these people might get their rip earlier because pixar let a dvd float out. because these people now have a good rip, they may forgo attending a theater.
letting one dvd float out into the world could potentially cost pixar $25,000. i bet if pixar offered the family either the dvd or $25,000, the family would take the $25,000.
i agree with lr, and i think 25k is an underestimation

all the money in the world wouldn't be worth doing whatever you could for your child who is dying. pretty sure that's true for the majority of people.
call me an optimist, but some shit is just plain important to people.
but the dying child has stuffed animals to clutch. why does she need to keep the dvd to clutch onto?

I dunno ask her. Maybe she'll let you know through the tears of unfathomable sadness.
they were christians, so it was probably a moment of rapturous joy.

If this is true, I retract the bit about attention-garnering.

"Pixar officials declined to comment on the story or name the employees involved."
What about the bit about Pixar being ridiculous? I think they were pretty spot-on.

Well sure they made a movie about an old guy flying around using lots of balloons like he's james and the giant peach.
That's certainly ridiculous.

I didn't say pixar was ridiculous, I said making that effort and then being sure to take the dvd back with them was ridiculous. But that was before I knew they didn't mean the story to go public.
> I didn't say pixar was ridiculous, I said making that effort and then being sure to take the dvd back with them was ridiculous. But that was before I knew they didn't mean the story to go public.
I didn't say Pixar was ridiculous either. I said they were being ridiculous (according to you).
Though it looks like it's considered retracted.
> I said making that effort and then being sure to take the dvd back with them was ridiculous.
i bet the whole reason they sent someone was to bring the dvd back. otherwise, pixar would probably have just sent it via fedex.
:) nah, it was more personal that way. and just because pixar didn't obviously leak the story, did not mean that they did not still leak the story. good advertisement and cheap.
> nah, it was more personal that way.
if they were going for the pr, then that was probably part of the reason. assuming they weren't going for pr, then i still maintain that the whole reason they sent someone was to ensure the dvd came back.
agreed. good point above.
i see no violation or duplicity in pixar's actions. if the girl had wanted to drive in a car that cost hundreds of millions to manufacture, would anybody fault the owner for locking the car after the drive was complete?
i'm certainly not faulting them. i don't believe that corporations have any ethical obligation to sacrifice themselves for a random dying child.
as is typical of americans, overlooked are many children dying around the world from starvation and contaminated water. this one parted with existence on a magical opioid carpet.
