so basically google will transcribe all phone calls and then just have all your phone calls recorded somewhere?
oui.
Hi, so how do you sms via your google voice number? Can you? I mean obviously there's the normal way and it sends it, but it doesn't use YOUR number. My problem is that I'm trying to register my phone with an activation system that requires my number and when I use a text to activate, it sends from a different number -- I think?
For example if one wanted to use Facebook SMS or Twitter.
download the gv app to your phone or use the web interface
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
I finally got my cell phone activated on my new number.. and it's really awesome because I can send and receive texts from the cabin where i don't normally have cell reception!
Ok I have a ghetto LG flip I live in the dark ages of a 50 message max inbox. Nevermind. How the hell do you activate your phone on your google voice number?
"Verify your Phone
This phone must be verified before it can receive calls from Google Voice.
Google Voice will call your phone and prompt you to enter the following code: [...]"
under the gv settings' phones tab.

I do too. :-\
i use the lg v, which also has a fifty-inbox-max.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
I use the Motofone, which stores everything on the SIM card and I believe has something like a 28 SMS max.

I have the G1 ... which doesn't give a fuck.
I got my free cards!
Ok so I don't know what the problem is, but I'm still trying to activate my twitter with my gv number and it doesn't let me. Also I have been using the web interface, so it's not that. It just seemed to be the case that the way it was sent, didn't include the gv number (my previous reasoning which is not correct). I think the only time it sends a weird number back to me is when google voice is forwarding texts to my mobile. Is there any reason why texts are routed through different numbers back to you? I mean you can reply to them and the replies get sent back to the proper people but the number I receive the texts "from" is unknown or loosely randomish. This makes me think that if I reply text through my mobile phone the recipient isn't receiving the correct number either :[
Does anyone know what the fuck I'm talking about?
i got my cards today too!
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
so i guess im still a little confused on the whole texting part of this. how do you respond to a text and make the phone number it came from be your google voice number and not your cell number.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
sooo you just have to reply to the 1-406 number gotcha.
That clarifies things a bit. I still don't know why I cannot verify my gv number via twitter or facebook activation.
oh, so you aren't trying to verify a phone that you want to add to gv. you're trying to add your gv number to facebook/twitter?
facebook says this: "(Step 1 of 3) Please choose your country and mobile service provider below. If your mobile service provider is not listed, Facebook does not support them at this time." google voice is not listed.
i'm not on twitter, so i don't know what it says, but i would guess that it's something similar.
So. I've been trying to use google voice exclusively, but I hate the problem of dialing out. I like using my contacts in my phone. I saw a trick where you need to enter every phone number with google voice prefix and code entry prefix:
4083727626PP####6468758227
Where P is an automated pause code for my phone and #### is the pin number and the last set of numbers is the dialed number. This sucks though obviously because your pin is there and updating all your contacts when you change your pin would be stupid.
This would be fine and all if you memorize everyones phone number. But I'm not willing to do that, there are just too many people. I have a side job going on where I do computer work for people and there are a lot involved - it would be a waste of brainspace to memorize all their numbers. I need a record of all the people so google contacts is great. I wish there were a way to use it with just the phone. There is with the voice app, or the voice mobile site but I don't have a data plan.
Is there any way to select contacts to call when you dial into your voice account? I don't think there is from the times that I have checked.
Is there a solution other than memorization or the mobile site (w/prereq data plan)?
By the way I have 3 invites to anyone who hasn't received their requested invite.
Oh yeah this google search provides voicemails that users have selected to be shared/embedded in sites:
site: https://www.google.com/voice/fm/*
I'm not sure if they are just doing an embed and it comes up here or what function they are using to share it, but there you go.
edit: hah ttf code translated this improperly. you need to remove the space between "site:" and "https".
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i tried that and get nothing
wow then the results are disabled or not indexed now, it was working earlier. saw it in the news yesterday.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
if you have a smart phone shouldn't there be an option to set call options such as country and area code? i know on my q they are default blank, so i wonder if you set say the area code to <googlevoicenumber>pp#### it would call that first then the number you want thats already in your phone book.
good idea, won't work for me as my enV3 isn't a smartphone. don't worry i'll get a gphone when i'm bankrollin.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
also, w is pretty nice. it dials the initial number up to the w, then hitting the send button again finishes whatever you have after it. i use it for my voicemail.
> I'm not sure if they are just doing an embed and it comes up here or what function they are using to share it, but there you go.
yeah, they were shared.
> Is there a solution other than memorization or the mobile site (w/prereq data plan)?
i all i know of are those methods and the pause/pin trick you mentioned.
> By the way I have 3 invites to anyone who hasn't received their requested invite.
ditto
except there is no share feature exactly, so i guess it was just the mark as embedded link thing.
yeah, that's what i'd guess too

I requested an invite ages ago. I wonder why they aren't handing them out themselves anymore, only giving current users invites...pushing word-of-mouth?
maybe they are still giving them out themselves, yours just got lost (

i kinda like being able to embed voicemails.
finally, a way to post some of the drunk dials i get. now if only i could have google voice record all calls i place so i could hear my drunk dials..........

Huh? Why would it be free for someone to text you?
it's free to your google number, but standard carrier text rates apply when forwarding it to your regular number.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Well, yeah, it's just sending you a SMS. Phone company charges you to receive it... so what was all the confusion over?
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i was gonna say, people text my google voice number all the time and i dont get charged. should also note that i dont have them forwarded to my verizon phone.

seriously.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Yeah, they are.
NUMBER PORTING IS HERE
i've been holding on to my verizon wireless line simply to keep my number parked and forwarding to my google voice number. now that google voice supports number porting, it's time to transfer that number over and get rid of my verizon account.
unfortunately, each google voice account can only have one number. i want to keep my google voice number (646-875-8227), but i also want to keep my legacy number from verizon (406-672-5642). so i guess i need to set up a second google voice account to make this happen. oh well.
porting worked!
number parking, voicemail, and sms services, all for a one-time $20 fee! not bad!
area code 929 is going live this weekend. i kinda want it because it's my birthday (9/29) plus it's nyc.
i wonder if i could get 929-larz-man
that would be awesome.

yeah basically, it did not previously exist
come on, google
"There are no 929 area code numbers available at this time."
