asemi, you go get snow leopard yet?
i went to best buy earlier today but they were sold out. weak

I mistakenly spent ~170 bucks for the "box set" because they claimed I needed it to upgrade/install on a non-Leopard machine. then I read on the web that I could have just used the 30-dollar "upgrade from Leopard" disc. I am kind of pissed, and hoping that I can sell iLife and iWork to someone because I don't want them. (the Apple store doesn't accept returns of opened software.)
other than that, it's nice I guess? seems about the same as Leopard to me. Quicktime has a new icon but I haven't used it yet because it failed to play both an flv and an avi out of the box. VLC played both of them of course.
yeah, wsj said that apple is being gimmicky by claiming some users need the box set when they don't (a ploy to make more money).

it's kind of wicked shady. I don't like it. but I don't think there's really anything I can do about it. maybe I'll call them and complain.
write some letters to the editor to spread the word against buying the box set

what editor?
editors of newspapers in your area

my cousin said it was noticeably faster on his box (mac pro quad blah blah)
im still gonna snag it. for 30 bucks ill take it
Double clicking a job in a print queue in snow leopard brings up a preview of the document apparently, that's new I believe.
Otherwise I think it's just bug and security fixes.

quicktime is pretty spruced up. like I said though, I still haven't used it and don't really intend to.
I don't do anything too intense on my macbook, so I haven't noticed the speed thing. I've heard people claiming the upgrade freed like 17 gib on their machines, which sounds like bullshit, but it's probably just like a ton of powerpc-only code.

I found this in the
Apple Store Retail Purchase Policies
Note that, as an exception, you may return Apple branded software within the 14-day return period, and not be subject to a restocking fee, if you do not agree to the licensing terms, provided you do not retain any copies, including copies stored on a computer or other device. However, if your software includes a license that you can read before you break the seal or sticker on the software media packaging, you may not return the software once you break the software media packaging seal or sticker.
I am going to bring my copy to the store and tell them that I did not agree to the EULA and would like a refund. I am going to bring a printout of this return policy too. this better work.
good call

i installed it. ran it for a few hours then restored a time machine backup of leopard (10.5).
they are using python 2.6 in snow leopard and i dont have the free time right now to get all my shit for django on 2.6 (mysql bindings and other packages).
these are the days when i miss openbsd/unix in general. just pkg_add that shit. im don't dig using macports or fink on the mac.
so went back to leopard for now, but will upgrade when some one who has the time goes and figures it all out.

got mine today.. haven't installed yet.
I'm excited for full gesture support on my old macbook pro :)

so when i try to install it says the disc is unclean.. there are small abrasions on the disc.. i hope best buy will replace it.
three subpar experiences so far!

snow leopard worked!
it seems strange.. feels like my monitor's color balance is off slightly :/
By installing snow leopard, I freed up 18 gigs of HD space. the rumor is true! :D

to be fair, they measure gigabytes as 1000 megabytes (which in turn are measured as 1000 kilobytes, etc.) in snow leopard. so that contributes. the OS also doesn't support the PowerPC architecture anymore, which I'm willing to be frees up a lot.
wow that is hack (1 GB = 1000 MB)

I don't necessarily disagree with the decision, but to market it as freeing up space is pretty lame.
yeah, that's terrible. but it probably saves them a headache: people order a laptop with a 500gb drive, and when they get it, the os says the drive is 466gb. they call up and complain.

I was originally turned off by the decision, but I read a bunch of /. comments and a lot of people talked about how the computer industry just kind of co-opted the SI prefixes to mean something close to what they actually mean rather than what they actually do mean. then I changed my mind.
can you explain? i don't get it

giga, mega, and kilo are 1000 of each other in like every other field. for computer science to take those prefixes and use them for 1024 just because it's close to 1000 is kind of arbitrary and doesn't really make sense to anyone except for computer scientists. I know there is gibibyte and all that crap which you're supposed to use instead of gigabyte to mean 1024 mebibytes (or whatever it is), but no one actually uses those, so I think it makes sense to suck it up and stick to the true meaning of the prefixes (giga is 1000 megas, mega is 1000 kilos, etc.).

startup/shutdown is noticeably faster.. though I'm kind of bummed about the apparent lack of full gesture support for the trackpad.. I though they had some 3 finger gestures on the new macbooks? I only have 2 finger ones on my first generation MBP.
ok, i see what you mean now.
they should use MiB, GiB, etc., instead
