the linksys appears to have slightly better sensitivity. is it worth it?
the linksys has a better antenna, but the other one has more output power. so get the other one. you can always buy a better antenna for it online for a few bucks.
My experience with Linksys WMP54G are so-so, we sold quite a few of them and they tend to break a lot.
Personly, I would buy something like a D-Link DIR-635 or better ...
ugh. experiencing a terrible windows problem. vista is giving me the dreaded "unidentified network" / "local only" connection.
getting 169.xx.xx.xx ip address which apparently indicates the adapter can't get an ip from dhcp. can't really disable dhcp as there are a lot of other clients on the network. ipv6 disabled.

the adapter i got is a realtek 8185 and even after installing the x64 drivers specifically the problem continues. i might try and find an adapter with a shiny 'vista ready' label or something. i don't really want to go back to xp as i have a dx10 gpu (i rarely game, so i guess i could be convinced to revert, but still..)
i've been thinking, i might just revert to xp sp3. i lose dx10 and the ability to address all 4gb of memory but i gain a much smaller mem footprint and more stability.
you don't have to disable dhcp on the network to be able to use a static ip. just don't step on someone else's toes.
what about xp x64? then you could still address all 4gb.

Problem with XP 64-bit is that it's not really Windows XP, but more of a Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP hyrid. It's a bit of an odd duck and many devices and programs won't work. For example I had a hard time finding a wireless NIC and virusscanner (!) that worked with XP 64 the other day for a customer.
Stay away from XP 64-bit unless you really know what you're doing.
yep, i've heard the same thing and i will be going with 32-bit (xp pro sp3).
ok. thanks for the info. i've heard that drivers are hard to come by, but i didn't know about the apps business
sort of working now. wireless is only in 1.0 mbps mode and the stats show a TON of packet retries. any ideas what could be doing this?
okay it is oscillating between 1.0 and about 5.5 mbps when my laptop runs in 54 mbps just fine. it is in b/g mode.. it looks like it is running in b mode - supported rates only go up to 11mbps.
signal and link quality are both at around 67% so that seems ok.
weird
right next to the supported rates it says "Mode = G". :(
yep. when i turn the router into g-only mode, the computer won't connect to it. it won't even see it.
wow, this is a terrible experience. only runs in 1.0 mbps. i'm buying a wmp54g tomorrow probably.
:(
bought a new adapter, now running vista x64 again. all is well.
I now see I recommended a router earlier :o I meant the DWA-650 (IIRC)
I have a WMP54G in my FreeBSD router/AP
my SMC router / gateway can't port forward. the settings are there, but they just DON'T WORK. :(
hammer.
ozntz
toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
You have it set to gateway or router mode?
i didn't see a setting like that, i'll take a look tonight.
