then why not just go barefoot?
i've seen 3 people wearing these around the office. i want to understand what horrible tragedy befell them that would cause such a bad decision.
has anyone seen any legitimate data to support the conclusion that vff's actually accomplish anything?

I like being barefoot. A lot. I don't like dealing with the bleeding that comes from that, and I don't like shoes either.

yep, that's basically the reason people wear the things.

To be fair, my friend has a pair of the classics and said his feet felt "raw" after we walked around on the streets for an hour and a half (like they would if you were barefoot). He claims they are better suited for like...trail running or something on softer ground.

Huh. I guess I can kind of see the point, but no way would I shell out for something like that when I can't see it giving any real benefit over just being barefoot.
whoa, the mongolian warrior wears fivefingers?

That's what I've been hearing, except for the Treksport. That one appears to be a bit sturdier and designed to address a few of those concerns. But, I dunno for sure. *shrug*

> "i like wearing ultra-thin condoms because i like not wearing condoms"
Fix'd.
All it is, is a compromise for people who like being barefoot and all the toe-squishing benefits that come from it. It may not be a good compromise, I have no personal experience with them, but it's an interesting one.

At first I thought this was a bad comparison, but then I realized it's perfect! You like having sex but don't want to risk getting stds, so you wear a condom. Now relate this back to the shoesies and bam. Understanding.

haha, i considered that interpretation after i wrote this... but i still think it's fallacious, because the conclusion comes by way of a completely unrelated argument.
wearing vffs and being barefoot are way different, just like wearing a condom and not wearing a condom are way different. however, in both cases a common end is achieved via different means. you like being barefoot, so you convince yourself that fivefingers is a good enough compromise. i don't know whether it is; as far as i know, there is no data to support either conclusion.
i have a strong aesthetic distaste for vffs, but maybe some of you guys don't feel the same way. i can't find any fault with that, but the whole "they're like being barefoot!" arguments are a bit much.
how, for example, is wearing fivefingers superior to wearing chacos or other sandals? if anything, sandals like that seem to restrict your feets' movement even less than vffs. i don't know that i'd go for a run in my chacos, but they certainly own.
it's basically a wedgie for your toes

it = ?
vffs compared to alternatives like sandals
you're basically getting a sandal with less freedom and more toe-wedgie

right!

That's like saying there is no difference in freedom of movement between slim, driving gloves with leather palms and those fat fucking winter mittens that you can't grip anything with.
Do you think gloves are finger wedgies? :P

Anyway I agree they looks stupid (or I would have purchased a pair by now).
My solution to wearing something that doesn't make me feel like I'm being bulked up by a bunch of shoe is to buy flats with no real padding or arch support.
> That's like saying there is no difference in freedom of movement between slim, driving gloves with leather palms and those fat fucking winter mittens that you can't grip anything with.
you think that sandals are comparable to winter mittens? we are comparing vffs to sandals, not winter mountaineering boots.
> Do you think gloves are finger wedgies?
i think they give finger wedgies, sure.
> I would have purchased a pair by now
why? you said you used to walk around barefoot all the time without problem.
> My solution to wearing something that doesn't make me feel like I'm being bulked up by a bunch of shoe is to buy flats with no real padding or arch support.
so your objective is to avoid comfort and orthopedic support?

Right, I was exaggerating to make a point about freedom of movement. We can say regular mittens if you want.
> i think they give finger wedgies, sure.
Weird. I think gloves are quite comfortable. They don't give me any wedgie sensations (p.s. the word "wedgie" sucks so bad). Just as most items of clothing do, vffs probably feel comfortable once you've worn them a while and grow accustomed to them.
> you said you used to walk around barefoot all the time without problem.
Sure. I love to be barefoot. But I also like being able to walk outside without skewering my skin on pine needles, thorns, or pointy sticks. A thin layer of rubber protects from that while still letting your foot flex fully (unlike sandals, where you cannot grip better by spreading your toes).
> so your objective is to avoid comfort and orthopedic support?
Haha wow, not going to bother clarifying if these are what you consider to be the goals that follow from the conversation.

i'd just tell you that the "fit wasn't quite right" and that i would like the receipt so i could go "exchange them for a better size"! once at the store, i'd say, i realized that "my feet just weren't made for these things, but i'm sure they're great" and instead used the credit to buy some more tradish shoes. boom! solved.

"hey dude, why aren't you wearing shoes?"
"I don't like to"
"Uhm, this is an alkalai desert. If you walk around without shoes your feet are going to get tore the hell up."
"Nah I am fine all the time like this"
"No, I literally mean tore up. Like from chemical burn. Some folks here actually use vinegar to neutralize the dust when they get home after being out in it. I mean you are mostly fine for a few days with it... but... walking on it without any protection is a pretty good way to severely mess up your feet."
"Uh... what?"
"Don't worry about it. Forget I said anything."
"Okay, you want a rock I found?"
"Sure why not."
