... without optical drives, floppy drives, USB ports, or another computer.
I'm currently running OpenBSD 4.5 on my beat up T41 and wanting to run NetBSD because I'm going for my ham radio license soon and would like very much to have various radio packages at my disposal without having to jump through hoops and nigger-rig everything.
Problem is, I don't have anyway to initiate an install. I thought about dropping down to single-user and using the swap partition to hold the install cd/floppy, but will the OpenBSD bootloader recognize the NetBSD code?
Ideas? Suggestions?
You could but the NetBSD install kernel on your root partition. The OpenBSD bootloader might be able to boot that. You can then get the install sets through the Internet.

I'm not worried about the install sets, just getting it to that point is what I'm confused about.
that's what i was going to say bluet: you should be able to boot into single user mode, and use the netbsd kernel if you put the netbsd kernel somewhere accessible i think.
i was also going to recommend pxeboot or etherboot, but you would need another computer, or a server on the internet.
You won't be booting into single user mode, as you have to boot the OpenBSD kernel for that.
1. Copy the install kernel to /netbsd.
2. Reboot, wait for "boot>".
3. Type "boot /netbsd" and press enter.
:]
Why ``... without optical drives, floppy drives, USB ports, or another computer.''?
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Because my computer has none of those, and there's no other computer in the house.

you've never nigger-rigged something?
What? A T41 doesn't have any USB ports or a CD drive !?

My laptop has them, they just don't work.
...
Your laptop sounds pretty broken ...
Anyway.
I would take out the hard drive and connect it to another PC and install the OS there ... But you mentioned you also don't have access to another PC? :-(

I'd also stop tossing around racial slurs.

Carpetsmoker: yeah, it's interesting. I'm not trying extremely hard to do this, but it's an interesting little challenge.

Also, asemi, it's not a racial slur. It's just a phrase ... like nigger-rich or nigger-lipped (when someone gets the end of a cigarette or joint wet with saliva).

Oh. So that's what he meant..
Thanks, I just learned something.

I'm nothing if not informative. :)
On-topic: tried booting the NetBSD kernel, but it just hung. :-\
how ironic.

How is that ironic?

"just a phrase" is a pretty weak defense for willfully ignoring the racist etymology of something so obvious as "nigger-lipped."

asemi, you take everything way too seriously. :D

being well acquainted enough with the very real effects of something to not take it lightly != taking everything too seriously
I can joke about like raping babies with my friends because none of us have ever been personally affected by this and it's not like a pervasive societal problem that affects everyone
it's a little more difficult (not impossible by any means though) to take race or racism lightly because they are neither of those things
phi_

So because it's a "societal problem" I can't say nigger? Maybe it's because I've grown up in an environment where we can call someone a nigger or spic or slant and it never be malicious, but I don't get it ... no one cares.

I never said you can't say it, I'm just explaining why I'm not cool with tossing it around, especially in public.

I guess someone cares, huh :-o
In the case of racial/ethnic slurs, it's probably best to keep their usage limited to the specific environment you mentioned.
I think it's often difficult to distinguish between real racist use, and casual slang use. For that reason alone I would avoid the word nigger in most cases.
Especially online.
i am sure this is a redundancy. i am looking for a new operating system. i am thinking a linux/unix/freeBSD build and I could use some recommendations. i have the x200s coming on thursday (with luck) and i basically want a system that is highly customizable, runs clean enough to keep the battery running for many hours, and makes me happy. but there are so many releases.
what do you prefer?
> i basically want a system that is highly customizable, runs clean enough to keep the battery running for many hours, and makes me happy
you can't have all of those. you'll need to compromise.

i've never been a huge debian user. but i've been using it on my vps's last couple years and thats what im gonna put on my new thinkpad. i think im just getting older and dont want to mess with shit anymore. debian is stable and usually just works. plus be easier to match my production environment locally.

so debian? any runners up?

if openbsd ran on my hardware it would be my first choice. well if i could have flash and skype on it as well. then it would be. your in the same boat with your x200s with the hardware though.
arch is nice too

i am not sure if understand that last post. please rephrase

I know and love openbsd so much. it is a joy to administer and the documentation is amazing. the only thing preventing my consistent use of it on a desktop is the lack of good flash support.
and on the server side, the only thing preventing my use of it on my email/jabber/web server is my isp (verizon) being a bitch about running an smtp server. (which means I have to settle for ubuntu on my 256slice.)
doesn't verizon supply you with an smtp server?
my isp, bresnan, also doesn't allow smtp servers, but they provide me with one. so i run postfix, and i have this line in /usr/local/etc/postfix/main.cf:
relayhost=mail.bresnan.net
it's virtually identical to running your own smtp server. you just have to send everything to your isp's smtp server for relay.
asemisldkfj

hm. I suppose I could do that. and I guess it eliminates the reverse dns/spam filter issue. maybe I'll give it a try. having a dynamic IP is kind of annoying too though. do you run email for wingedleopard on your residential isp?
maple
i like large datasets
you should use a relay host always (from your house) as tons of people (including myself) block mail from dynamic ip blocks
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
yeah, I wouldn't run an smtp server at home unless I had a static ip and reverse dns entries.
> do you run email for wingedleopard on your residential isp?
no, i just use postfix to deliver locally-generated mail (daily reports, disk reports, and power outage reports). i use ~/.forward with the postfix relay to get it to me.
