Wow. SliceHost is pretty expensive IMO ...

Don't Let Your Walls Down
my thoughts exactly
yeah same.

the law is no protection
uh, as opposed to what?
other hosts?
ozntz
toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I think you are saying that because of the size and bandwidth numbers but its a xen instance
> uh, as opposed to what?
Opposed to what I pay for example?
I payed 300 euro for my server.
I payed one-time 150 euro setup/placing costs.
I pay ~35 euro/month.
The 256 slice is cheaper of course, but also very limited. So you should compare my costs to the 2GB or 4GB slice, which are pretty expensive!
Of course, whenever the hardware breaks I have to go to Amsterdam and fix it, but this of course also has certain advantages ...
you're colocating a server for $35 euro/month?
vps vs colocation is not the same game.
maple
i like large datasets
i use slicehost for a ton of stuff. i love it. i used to colo as well and also rent alot of full boxes but slicehost is easy.
daily/weekly snapshots.
scale vertically in less 5 minutes
when i need another box i can use one of the snapshots i have to be the base image for it
console access via web
no bullshit admin
also, these days im more concerned with software and my task than the hardware. slicehost 'just works' as they say. makes it convenient to just focus on what i need to get done.
i will be moving a decent site (60-70K uniques a month) over to it soon so we'll see about performace on that.
just 2c
i like it because they manage all hardware (redundant disks, psu, etc.) and have staff on site to replace it in a timely fashion. network links are under-booked, and if you go over bandwidth, they're nice (they will forgive random incidents like slashdots for free).
it's a bit pricy, but i don't know of any way to get the same level of hardware and network service.
> you're colocating a server for $35 euro/month?
Not USD, Euro. But yes, it's 35 Euro. Which is about 52 USD.
> vps vs colocation is not the same game.
I know, but it is a lot cheaper & you get a lot more.
As Lucas pointed out, he doesn't have to worry about hardware or even backups. But I would reckon dealing with a hardware failure every three years is better than paying double each month & having inferior specs ...
i'm looking into
innohost they seem to provide everything I want (good service, cPanel, PHP/MySQL, etc) and it's fairly well priced.
It just seems misleading to say it's expensive and compare it to colocation. It's still cheaper to go with a vps, even if you don't get the benefits from colocating. I haven't seen any other vps solutions that beat what value-added points slicehost provides.
Yeah sorry I didn't mean to use the USD Sign.
also, i cannot afford the initial investment in a server that has raid 10, a redundant psu, and a extra drive and psu on-hand.

meh i need to find a place that can colo 6us of equipment fairly cheap..
lucas does Slicehost have phpMyAdmin? It looks pretty nice when I actually look at what it provides, and considering this site is pretty fast...
Slicehost gives you a virtual machine. If you want phpMyAdmin, you need to install it yourself.
goodo. :)
the quesion is, does lucas use phpMyAdmin?
sometimes (
pma). i use the mysql cli as often, though.
for $20/month i'm pretty convinced I can use slicehost for
bricksinmotion when I fund the hosting for it myself.
for php/mysql/apache and other total nessecities would 256mb slice be sufficient for a site which would have around 500 active users in the next two years or so (or so predicted by myself, assuming the admin of the site is dedicated and all)
yes, depending on how resource-intensive the php code and mysql queries are.
i'm gonna ask if I can rewrite the site in my own time when i've finished the resources sections and chatroom on the site so it'll be less query intense and use less PHP (the code atm is a total mess)
is wingedleapard hosted on this server? source code anywhere?
yes,
www.wingedleopard.net is the same server. source code for what, exactly?
i heard once (or it might have been bullshit) your site (/lucas/) had source code for the blog and all.
i haven't released it yet, but i'm willing to (pending a security audit).
ah righto :)
