I figured I'd ask the experts in photography here :)

So, what's a good, cheap camera for someone with no intention of becoming a professional at all, but who would enjoy quality pictures?

Bonus points for models that aren't too new, because I guess these would be harder to find in Brazil.

All cameras take good quality pictures nowadays. Some are a lot better than others, but they're all adequate.

the law is no protection
I am making a post in here so I remember to ask my friend who bought one recently for some advice.

This one seems pretty neat: http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.as … shot+sx120

Thoughts? The 10x optical zoom caught my attention, and it's about the same price of other models with 4x or 6x zoom.

On the cheaper side, good review for this one: http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.as … shot+a1000

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
from what I hear, the canon g series point and shoots are pretty great.

here is the newest in the line: canon powershot g11

If that's too expensive, the g9 and g10 models are pretty decent as well. I have several friends and college profs. that really like theirs. It shoots RAW as well and you have manual control over exposure if you like. This is probably the point and shoot i'd get if I were looking for one.

go with canon for point-and-shoots.

don't get a viewfinder--they're worthless. i don't find zoom to be useful on point-and-shoots, but maybe you would.

i recommend these, depending on what you can afford:

canon a480
canon sd940 is
canon s90

if you find yourself considering the canon g and sx lines, consider the canon 500d as well.

-----

if i bought a point-and-shoot today, it would be the canon s90. it has all of the awesome features of the g11, and it drops the useless ones (e.g., viewfinder).

The s3 looks like a sweet deal but I can't find it in any web stores here... Is there a successor model for it?

g11 also shoots raw, if you are into that.. I don't think the s90 does :)
