There is no such thing as a decent content management solution.

Static HTML files is the best system I've used.

nny: so what solution would you suggest for managing content on a site?

weasley: seems like a decent cause! I saw this when searching around ttf too.

bluet: one terrible example of static pages: we have an intranet site for quickly referencing things. we have 600+ static pages that each have to be manually updated for header images or a style change. yes we need external css. sure it can be marginally automated, but a CMS would probably work for a system like this, or a custom dynamic php-with-mysql solution.

I have not yet seen a website that could not b e deployed and managed with any more than untar and properly written pre-req check and configuration / installation / clean up scripts being built in.

If your site doesn't have an installer... you've made a mistake.

If your goal is to control content ... as in media... that's a DAM solution... and that can be very expensive. I have yet to see one free that beats the one I wrote for myself in college... ( my college used it for like 7 years ). Xinet is nice if you have the cash but a time sink.

Truthfully though this area of tech is woefully under developed.

Our site is a list of links with miscellaneous pages spread about. Alot of our staff have learned about sharepoint and want us to basically just turn it on. I'm interested in a CMS but the ones I have tested are going to require more time then I have right now. Is there any out there that also have a good file manager?

I'm using joomla right now, it's decent for my purposes, but I'm probably going to use drupal eventually.

With joomla there isn't much to do with file management. It's there but the web based browsing is meh. I'm using ftp for file management. Adding modules is as easy as dropping a zip on the server, or even linking to the zip.

I don't really know what you're talking about nny, where does the site come from? Are you talking about deploying a site that was built for you? Do you custom design sites and systems for handling what users can do on a site? Do you just have people administering them by untarring them?

Is your DAM thing available to the public?

To make the need for a CMS more concrete:

In an organization we have users in a department who submit documentation to a knowledge base. The current system is embarrassing. It's a series of static pages that are not cleaned properly and have different formats for each of them. It's not database driven. The styles do not persist. The system should be scalable for many more users and have an enterprise level appearance. I have no desire to create a custom user interaction system with this database. Are CMS's not the solution here?

Yep... all CMSes suck.

My opinion is that Google is beginning to realize this... thus their desire to switch protocols to SPDY.

HTTP doesn't work... webdav was never widely adopted...

Simple fact is... flash / flex came closest to providing a possible method for CMS design...

BUT ultimately my guess is, until widely accessible broadband allows for functional upload and download rates for media... CMS design will be a slave to the lack of resources available.

dannyp: i use django for just about everything now. i've built a replacement for joomla for my current client with a few migration scripts to get them over to it. I should put the scripts up some where, I'm sure other people could utilize them.
