i guess this thread is mostly intended for bsdlite and myself.
i just submitted the electronic apps for:
u cal at los angeles
u cal at santa barbara
both apps only asked for one set of gre scores, which works well for me. ucla only asks for your gpa for the last sixty units from each institution (they don't ask for a cumulative gpa), which is nice.
just an fyi if money is a concern, uc tuition fees increased. revised, i remembered wrong.
see:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/ … 1AND7E.DTL
yeah, i heard about that on npr. i won't be going anywhere without full funding, so it's not an issue.

i'm going to have to revise my list of schools a bit. the gre testing center is full until the 15th of december, meaning that i'd have to apply to most of the uc schools with my first-time gre scores which are marginal at best. i feel like sending apps to ucla, usc, usc bus. school, ucsb, etc, might just be a misallocation of the money i could use to apply to other schools with later deadlines :/
the app for ucsb is complete:
(1) online app submitted
(2) supplements mailed
(3) gre scores reported
(4) online letters submitted
the app for ucla is incomplete:
(1) online app submitted
(2) letters and supplements unmailed
(3) gre scores reported
i'm waiting on a letter from a professor. i need it postmarked tomorrow. :|
the app for cal is incomplete:
(1) online app unsubmitted
(2) supplements mailed
(3) gre scores reported
(4) online letters submitted
their online app has a problem. i can't select emphases, and the department requires that two are selected. so i've been trying to contact various offices at cal for the past few days (to no avail). luckily it doesn't have to be submitted until dec. 8. i'm getting anxious about this.
---
i've only done three schools and i'm already not having fun.
bsdlite

i finished my usc app today, but now i'm having reservations about submitting it. i don't really want to have to learn how to knife fight in order to succeed at the ph.d. level.
haha

usc marshall app submitted :)
awesome--i got the letter for ucla.
now i'm trying to get a hold of cal.
i got someone on cal on the phone, and she added the emphases to my application.
all three are fully complete! /o/
prepare for round two.
glad it's going well :D
thanks :)
i just started the following apps:
u minnesota
caltech
u wisconsin
u michigan
columbia u
u washington
uc davis
nyu
i'm undecided on applying to these:
mit
yale u
u penn
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
nyu quietly added to the end of the list... :P
they're ordered by due date then by nrc rank.
i had a shitty lineup in 2006:
Stanford University
University of Minnesota
University of California - Berkeley
University of Rochester
University of California - San Diego
California Institute Technology
University of Wisconsin - Madison
University of Michigan
University of California - Los Angeles
Duke University
New York University
University of Washington
Washington University
University of California - Santa Barbara
do you have specific people you want to work with at these institutions or are you just applying based on general rankings and specialization rankings?
both. i applied to berkeley because of specific faculty members there, the location, the field strengths, and the overall rank.
really, just one page? i thought academic cvs were supposed to go on forever.
mine is a wicked cv-resume hybrid
just an update, joe currently has a brick and mortar store open at
the block.
will definitely apply:
uc berkeley
u minnesota
uc los angeles
uc san diego
caltech
u wisconsin
u michigan
u rochester
cornell u
new york u
columbia u
carnegie mellon u
u pittsburgh
brown u
u texas
u washington
uc santa barbara
u colorado
arizona state u
u arizona
($1361 total)
if i want to waste money:
mit
u chicago
stanford u
u pennsylvania
northwestern u
($425 total)
bsdlite

i think, ex post, the "wasted money" list will include a lot more than 5 ;)
yeah :P
but at least with the others i have a chance of admission
'i think, ex post, the "wasted money" list will include a lot more than 5 ;)'
- information has a price. in this case assuming perfect information is a misleading (but common) economic assumption.
nice list. it looks like there is a good chance of you being with in one day's drive of me :)
bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
i guess i'll have to write "ex post" twice next time
i guess i just don't understand.
i know you were just making a friendly comment, but i guess i don't think ex post analysis of the price of information is even logical. ex post, information has no value because there is no longer uncertainty. but to apply to many schools is to pay for information. it is like saying, after you purchase lunch, you no longer need to purchase lunch.
were you just being intensely ironic?
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
Isn't Bozeman already within one day's drive of you, Francis?
if you mean a 24 hour drive, yes. but for me I burn out after 10-15 hours, so not really.
i think 16 hours east from bozeman is somewhere in minnesota
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
Oh, that's where I guessed he was. I couldn't remember which cold M state it was.. 24 hrs is definitely too long to drive in one day.
my gre percentiles have risen over the past few years! shit rules
print date: 12/13/06
test date: 12/06

print date: 12/02/09
test date: 12/06
verbal: 590 / 84%ile
quantitative: 790 / 92%ile
writing: 6.0 / 98%ile
that 98%ile makes me feel like a badass
haha :)
apps fucked:
u columbia
u penn
u minnesota
terrible feelings
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
i didnt think you were applying to u penn
missed the deadlines?
yeah. i had already sent the gre scores to columbia and penn, too, so i wasted $40 there. :(
> i didnt think you were applying to u penn
i decided that i'd go for most places not in the top five, including u penn and northwestern u.
oh well, i'll move on. nyu is due on friday! i'm gonna finish it today, damnit.
Étrangère
I am not a robot...
> i'm gonna finish it today, damnit.
Did you?
i'm still working on it. i just improved my
cv.
what order do you have for your technological proficiencies?
a proprietary metric that incorporates interest of the reader and level of proficiency.
bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
P = { y : y = f( interest( #applicants, x ), proficiency(x), x ) }
interest( #applicants ) > 0
d(interest)/d(#applicants) < 0
d^2(interest)/d(#applcants)^2 > 0
i did something terrible to my caltech, u wisconsin, and u washington apps. u washington was nice enough to let me fix it. i have yet to hear back from the other two.
the price of gre score reports rose by $3 today. :( i could have saved $27 by ordering all of the remaining needed ones yesterday, if i had known.
me: anyway, all of my apps are officially straightened out! :D
i got all of those shitty statements fixed
Ryan: tits
me: tits indeed
i completed all of my applications this morning.

i'm departing bzn right now for asu!
i'm departing phx right now for bzn!
the trip was very nice.
and exhausting.
how was it?
asu pros:
lots of personal attention, even from ed prescott (nobel laureate)
great for macro
good for micro theory
phoenix weather is usually great
phoenix gets lots of good shows (indie music)
asu cons:
poor in applied micro
poor in econometrics
mediocre reputation in general for econ
phoenix weather in july and august is god-awful
phoenix lacks culture and diversity

so which school are you leaning more towards now or are you still waiting for more info on the funding?
i'll only attend if i get funding. i want u washington badly.
i just realized how ridiculous this is:
"Although your application was very good, we received 500 applications this year and could only admit about 20%." -- u texas
i replied:
"You admitted 100 of 500 applicants? \n\n Best, \n Lucas"
i'll apply to these schools this year, unless u washington comes through:
Stanford U
U California, Berkeley
Northwestern U
U Michigan
New York U
U California, Los Angeles
California Institute of Technology
U Wisconsin
U California, San Diego
Cornell U
Brown U
Carnegie Mellon U
U Rochester
U Texas
U Washington
U Pennsylvania
U Minnesota
Columbia U
so i got admitted without funding by both u washington (uw) and u california, santa barbara (ucsb).
uw told me that they wouldn't hold it against me if i accepted admission now then later retracted if i get a job or a better offer elsewhere. so i informally accepted admission with uw. they were excited to have me, as they really like my research.
then, unexpectedly, ucsb gave me a good (not great) offer (
details). i contacted uw. i told them that
ceteris paribus i'd prefer to attend uw instead of ucsb. however, with no funding from uw and a good package from ucsb, i would attend ucsb.
i got a response from uw. they are trying to find funding for me. leverage works wonders. fsmart knows.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
nice man, hope it all works out for ya.
thanks. we'll see.
leverage!
u washington offered me tuition and $4,000.
smiles!
me: "I'm very interested in attending UCSB, I just need to try to get a bit more funding from them first."
gary charness: "water from a stone? but they can usually work something out."
finality: i'm not going to graduate school this fall.

i'm applying to one business school--cmu tepper for their ph.d in economics program.
this is the most strenuous and frustrating application ever.

i also applied to u zurich.

here come the decisions!
ucsb: accepted, no word on funding yet.

list updated, as always.
do you think you have improved your application this year?

Stanford's campus totally sucks.
maybe. nny says it's "hella" nice. is "hella" a negation adverb?
my advising professor (in whose house i'm currently living) is a visiting fellow at the hoover institution at stanford. i sent him this email:
Stanford just declined admission to me again! Can you knock some heads together for me while you're there? Hopefully the Economics Department isn't too far from the Hoover Institution.
I've also been declined admission by UC Berkeley and UCLA. UCSB has admitted me again.

Let me know if you make any progress for me at Stanford! :]
i think he took me a bit too seriously.

three schools haven't sent me a decision yet. they only have 36 hours remaining!
northwestern u

getting into a top ten (northwestern) would be insane
well that didn't work out as i had hoped. i was rejected everywhere except for ucsb, and they don't have funding for me. so i guess i'll just pay for myself ($25,000 for tuition alone) to attend ucsb.
this is a little ironic because last year i was offered $34,000 of funding to attend ucsb. i turned it down to work a job (which i would hate) and re-apply to get better offers (which i wouldn't receive).
Étrangère
