bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
i've had several severe problems since getting my x200s:
* intermittent freezing, not a result of overheating
* problems coming out of hibernate and sleep
* inability to connect to some high-signal quality wireless networks
* intermittent loss of connection to wireless networks
(<3 intermittent-ness)
has anyone else had problems like this with their tps? how about similar problems with non-tps comps running windows 7? i've spent more time rebooting out of freezes than using my computer today. it's 2 weeks old :/
i'm considering sending it back and gettin' a dell (tm)
my new x200s just shipped today. i'll keep you updated on its performance.
if there's a dell that you like just as much, then send it back (but make sure they waive the restocking fee). otherwise, i suggest you take advantage of ibm's great support and send it in to be fixed.
here's bow ibm depot support works (from my experience):
day 1: call them. they issue a ticket and ship a box to you (overnight service, dhl with me in the past).
day 2: put your laptop in the box, take to a drop-off location (they put a paid overnight label on it for you).
day 3: they begin working on it.
day 4: they are done working on it. they ship it back to you (overnight again).
day 5: you get it. you're lovin' it again!
my turn-around was about one week. your mileage may vary.

... ?
just joking. it was meant to be a comment on the quality of dell. :)
i'm taking lenovo's post-purchase survey.
I selected 2-day shipping. Lenovo shipped the laptop via UPS World Ease Expedited service, which takes 4-days from Asia. This is unacceptable.
The LCD screen has awful vertical viewing angles. If I move my head up or down a bit, then colors and contrast change dramatically. This is unacceptable for photo editing.
How many friends, family members or colleagues have you referred to Lenovo in the last 12 months? 4
submitted! :D
ok, so here's my plan. i'm going to call the sales center on monday and tell them that i hate my lcd screen. i'm going to ask them to give me a full refund on this laptop (no restocking fee) so i can reorder one with the other lcd screen.
check out this sick deal
r u really that unhappy with the screen? it doesn't look like that good a deal relative to what you have.
well it's the exact same laptop with the downgraded screen. it's about $108 cheaper.
yeah, i just can't get used to these viewing angles. it might be exacerbated by my new glasses. regardless, i'm going to go for the downgrade.
check this. they have the downgraded screen and it looks like the viewing angles are even worse :(

where does it say that the wxga angles are worse than the wxga+ angles?
nowhere, I was just looking at the test shots.
both screens are led-backlit, which means that these are potential upgrades:
HX121WX1-100 (rare)
HV121WX5-100 ($215, widely available)
HV121WX6-100 ($215, widely available)
see
this for more on the affs lcd mod.
i was looking at that earlier, but the guy who modded out his x200 said that the x200s could not be coerced.
the x200s with the wxga+ led-backlit lcd cannot be swapped.
the x200s with the wxga led-backlit lcd can possibly be swapped.
the screens in order of awesomeness:
1. HX121WX1-100 (rare)
2. HV121WX6-100 ($215, widely available)
3. HV121WX5-100 ($215, widely available)
the post-sales guy wanted to charge me restocking because it's my fault i'm unhappy with the laptop. i was about to go into argumentative-mode. but then he told me that if i book a new order and call back with the order number, they'll waive the restocking fee and give me free shipping.
done!
good news. keep us updated.
i don't have high hopes for the viewing angles for the new lcd, but at least i'll save $100 and be able to upgrade to the HV121WX6-100.
the x200 tablet has some killer lcd options (see
psref). you can choose between ccfl-backlit ffs, led-backlit ips, and a better led-backlit ips. they are all only wxga (1280x800), which is a bummer. (info on the technologies
here.)
a tablet equivalent to the x200s that i ordered would cost about $1,500. the HV121WX6-100 is an led-backlit affs+ screen which should be as good as any of those offered screens.
oh, and i'm posting
here.
i saw :) first thing to pop up when i searched for modded out x200s screens
haha awesome
UPDATE
the x200s with the wxga+ led-backlit lcd can be swapped with difficulty.
the x200s with the wxga led-backlit lcd can be swapped with ease.
the former requires either a harness adapter or a "skillful soldering technique." see
here.
welp, last night my new x200s froze. it was on battery. maybe i'm experiencing the same issue that bsdlite was having. if it happens again, i'm calling ibm for a new battery.
my x200s has frozen up several times on battery power. i think i will call up technical support. what is the preferred method?

mine froze last night (after battery replacement), too. awesome. gonna send my shit in for mobo repair if it happens again, i guess.

hahahah

thinkpad army is taking casualties.
haha, shit! the thing is that it is definitely a hardware issue. i thought it might have been the way i was fucking around with windows 7 boot drive, an everything but it froze up on me running ubuntu as well.
i meant, what number should i call? does ibm tech support have a different number than lenovo?
oh and i also got some weird blue (like old fashioned TV not tuned in properly) lines that rolled up my screen on wake up after hibernate yesterday. i am just glad i bought the extended warranty.
maple
i like large datasets
return it and get the t400s!
then he'd sacrifice size/weight/battery life! :p
i'm updating my bios presently. maybe it's a fix for the freezing issue.
Lenovo Toolbar useful or annoying?
nonexistent. :)

i did the most recent bios update before ordering my replacement battery fwiw
well, i haven't had the issue again. it could even be software related--windows 7 is a creepy os.
the right shift key on my keyboard isn't working consistently. imma call up and ask for a new one.
otherwise, i'm happy with everything.
no hassle as usual. "you should get that new keyboard by monday." <3 ibm/lenovo support.
i just got the new keyboard. 15 minutes later, it is installed, and the defective keyboard is repackaged and ready for ups pickup. :)
i just got a follow-up call from lenovo. :)

my x200s wifi is weak shit
wtf, my adapter was set to use 802.11b only. i got some 802.11g now. much better.
