this is the sister thread to the equivalent nikon thread.

i can't easily do research on dismal (a slow, old pc), but here are three that i know are good.

fd mount
ae-1 (1976)
a-1 (1978)

I have several film slrs, bsdlite. If you'd like, you can have one of them for cheaper than that. I'll post specs tomorrow.

Edit: There's only one canon, though, and I'm keeping that one. :P

i just bought this bundle for $60 from a student in town for the girlfriend for christmas.

includes:
* canon ae-1 program in good, working condition (with a little "gunk," cleanable)
* 50mm 1:1.8 canon lens
* 35-70mm 1:3.5-4.5 mc macro cosina lens

however, i was adjusting the f-dial (what's it called?) and the aperture size wasn't visibly changing in either lens. could this mean they're both broken, or that i'm equally ignorant about them? :)

while "testing" it out (basically messing around with it and pressing buttons, since i have no idea wtf is going on) i realized that i need an slr, too :) so, i might have to take you up on that, etran. going to keep watching auctions etc though, too, since there's no hurry on the second one.

Are you talking about the ring at the base of the lens? If so, that's the aperture ring. And if you don't see the aperture size changing when you turn it, that lens is most certainly not in working condition.

I'm assuming you're not talking about the dial on the top of the camera.

that's true if it's a nikon lens, but untrue if it's a canon fd lens.

canon fd lens
unmounted: aperture ring doesn't change aperture size
mounted: aperture ring doesn't change aperture size
mounted, shutter released: aperture is adjusted to specified size

nikon f lens
unmounted: aperture ring does change aperture size
mounted: aperture ring doesn't change aperture size
mounted, shutter released: aperture is adjusted to specified size
