can someone please explain some windows seven voodoo to me?
http://cdn.wingedleopard.net/lucas/img/misc/t … ibrary.png
the bottom-left window [C:\Users\lucas\Documents\buckets\s3.lucasreddinger.com\private\apps] shows that all of my files are organized into directories, with one for each school.
the top-left window [Libraries\Documents\buckets\s3.lucasreddinger.com\private\apps] does not display these directories. instead, it shows what is in all of the directories themselves.
why and how is it skipping a level of directories and just showing everything in them? i've tried recopying this stuff and it just does it again and again.
SO FRUSTRATING
please help!

I think this is just the nature of how "Libraries" work. they just display all of the content in every directory that is part of the Library, ignoring directory structure. it's the same idea as a universal search for all "documents" on your computer or something.
a list of the contents of the entire library is kind of a stupid way to approach file browsing and I'm not sure why they present it to the user in that way though. it makes sense for a search feature, but for file browsing it should not look like that. if they want to display Library content in a file browsing type of way they should make obvious some filters like date, file type, etc. that will modify the contents of the Explorer window.
Microsoft can't do anything right.

wait a minute what's going on in that second screenshot? did you change some settings and not refresh?

OK ignore my other post I don't know what is going on that is so weird.

I guarantee you that this is documented somewhere by Microsoft but will take at least thirty minutes to find.

maybe my initial post does have some truth to it.

play around with your view settings.

does navigating to the folder differently (i.e. by the tree structure on the left or some other means) change the way the files/folders are displayed?
> I think this is just the nature of how "Libraries" work. they just display all of the content in every directory that is part of the Library, ignoring directory structure.
i can show you an inconsistency.
http://cdn.wingedleopard.net/lucas/img/misc/t … istent.png
both of these directories don't contain any files. they both only contain a bunch of subdirectories. these subdirectories only contain files (there are no further subdirectories).
in the top window, it skips listing the folders, and it just lists the folders' contents.
in the bottom windows, it does list the folders.
notice that i'm using the library feature in the exact same manner. i used the same method of arriving at those two locations, i just deviated at one point. you can verify this in the address bar and navigation pane.

I'm getting access denied on that link.

what is the point you deviated at?

something is probably messed up with the view settings for that folder then? I don't know. does Windows store that stuff in a file like desktop.ini or something? I forget.
all view settings are reset and all ini files are deleted. it's still happening.

this is very bizarre.

maybe you found a bug?
i don't know. i deleted all of my libraries. fuck those things.
i want a big, awesome link to "documents" on the start menu. but it can only link to a documents library.
:(
i tried to create a shortcut to my documents folder on the task bar. but when i click it, it runs windows explorer at the location "libraries" (which is empty).
can this stupid os function without the libraries component?!

I hate when things can't function in ways they are not intended to. that sounds sarcastic but it's not.
i crashed explorer by deleting too many files at once
granted i was deleting them through the search interface, and the number was on the order of 10,000
:)
haha, it crashes if i try to delete 9,460 files or more at once.

what a terrible operating system. if the operating system has memory misallocation, what fucking chance do applications have?!

I always want Microsoft to do something right, but they never do.
4,995 at once: success.
6,048 at once: success.
8,019 at once: success.
9,288 at once: success.
9,500 ... crashed while selecting the files for deletion.
9,604 at once: success!
18,018 ... crashed while selecting the files for deletion.
I feel the potential for serious jaw clenching going on.
"I always want Microsoft to do something right, but they never do." - I know :(
how hard is it to design a functional operating system when you are a 268B dollar business and it is your primary product?
> Microsoft can't do anything right.
That's not true. Please don't exaggerate.
The Windows "classic" blue background is the best.

hahaha, so true.
what's with your nested documents documents in the libraries. also how did you get only files to display, i can't seem to achieve that.
i did notice if you try navigating the library path it is not like a normal directory structure, i think there is an underlying difference between the fs heirarchy and the library system.
> what's with your nested documents documents in the libraries.
under the documents library,. you can choose "documents" or "public documents."
> also how did you get only files to display, i can't seem to achieve that.
i don't know. if i knew how, then it wouldn't be called "voodoo." did you watch the sequence of screenshots? it just happens to do it with one folder and not with the other. all desktop.ini files have been deleted.
> i did notice if you try navigating the library path it is not like a normal directory structure, i think there is an underlying difference between the fs heirarchy and the library system.
why isn't it consistent, though?
yeah i saw the screenshots, voodoo doesn't mean what you seem to be implying.
anyway since that is the case i'll put a windows 7 "voodoo" complaint here:
in 7, raw sockets don't exist. this is a problem because i like to use nmap. it looks like windows 7 is on their supported list of OS's. when I run it though it always fails on initializing the interface. when i do:
nmap --iflist
DEV WINDEVICE
eth0 <none>
eth1 <none>
eth2 <none>
...
I get none for every device.
nmap 10.128.128.128
dnet: Failed to open device eth7
> yeah i saw the screenshots, voodoo doesn't mean what you seem to be implying.
from webster: "black magic"
i meant that (a) i don't know how it works, (b) i don't know what it's doing, and (c) it's evil.
