I am guessing that standard scrolling is "jump scrolling" meaning that the app redraws ASAP. and that smooth scrolling has a "nice" animation for scrolling.

ok i was trying to do some screenshots to show the behavior but it does not capture the cursor :[

both are enabled with the middle button + trackpoint.

Standard
standard scrolls until you let go of the up or down direction on the trackpoint. standard allows you to scroll at a single speed and is only active when you are holding the button and scrolling.

Smooth
smooth scrolls continues scrolling at the rate you set. you can set the rate by distancing the up or down cursor from the stationary cursor using the trackpoint. with smooth scrolling you can change the speed of scrolling and continue scrolling without pressing a direction. oh and you can let go of both the button and the direction and it will continue scrolling as well at whatever rate you have set.

I don't use the middle button for scrolling.
