i think that a total bithead dac-amp would be a good solution to the problem.
headroom has a package deal right now--if you buy a pair of headphones, you can get a bithead for $99 (a $60 discount).
i'm thinking about getting a pair of grado sr 60i headphones with a bithead for $178 total.

The headphone jack also? IIRC the X200 has an Intel Azalia and should provide fairly good quality audio on the headphone jack...

i am not sure if i would carry the extra equipment around with me just to marginally improve sound quality. when at home you have a sweet speaker set up.

i really enjoy having a sweet mobile setup, though. that's why i want to upgrade the lcd screen and add the bithead. i'm all about coding in cafes. i want to do a lot of traveling next year, too.

that sucks. the built-in audio on my t61 was pretty good. this isn't a bad idea if you just want to setup something at home. I usually run my macbook through an old yamaha amp/receiver/stereo and then to headphones or speakers.
If I were traveling, I would refrain from wearing headphones. It makes you appear less approachable, and I like environmental noise.

i currently have the er-6i iems. if someone told me that the sr60i cans weren't much better, i wouldn't do it.
