a friend of mine showed me this application and it is really neat!
http://www.stereopsis.com/flux/
it adjusts the color temperature of your monitor depending on the time of day and the type of lighting you have at home. at first I thought it was horrible and everything looked yellow at night, but now I can't live without it. you can disable it for a period of time if you are doing color-sensitive work or anything (because I know a lot of you do photo stuff), but when you're not doing anything that depends on colors much it is great!
when I disable it now I want to gouge my eyes out because everything looks so awful and blue. no wonder I had the brightness of my screen turned down so low before I used this.
The linux version doesn't seem to do anything.
the problem that i foresee is that the resultant screen temperature depends on many factors, including amount of ambient light, brightness of backlight, and reflectiveness.
just for fun, i made these for you:
screen balance
ambient balance
the screen is balanced at 6150 K, while the background is balanced at 3000 K.

yeah it's not going to be perfect all the time if you change setups at home and have different lighting, but there is at least the "type of light" setting to compensate for it. and the difference between ambient light temperature and color temperature of your screen is exactly what this is supposed to address.
that's why i posted them. :)
I like this. It sucks the mouse cursor isn't modified though.

really? it just does the color temperature of the display, so it should affect anything displayed, shouldn't it? that seems odd. are you using the Linux version?
i am using both the mac and pc. i like

i noticed that too, i'm on win7.

weird. I'll check it out on my macbook and see if I can tell if the cursor is affected.

weird. that is really obvious too. I haven't noticed the same thing on os x.
yeah, me either.

I just noticed this cursor thing on vista. the cursor looks gross.
i dumped f.lux i like the idea but it just got annoying the screen changing suddenly. perhaps if they could use the webcam to whitebalance.
woops, how'd that happen? ... one too many clicks

it only changes twice a day.
I had the auto brightness thing turned on in os x a while ago and it was really annoying. I'd like move my head six inches and notice the brightness of the screen changing slightly. kind of distracting.
