i turned it on for the first time in a while. nothing happened except some fan spin-up, then the pop happened. pretty sure it's a cap on the power supply.
i think that's the first time that has happened to a computer in my presence. has anyone else had this happen?
is it easy to desolder and resolder in a new capacitor?
i am considering a new cheap box for backups and torrents.
haha BOOM
i'll sell you these on the cheap:
intel dg41ty motherboard
mushkin 1gb ddr2 800mhz 4-4-4-12 sdram
i want a motherboard with six sata ports. then i won't have to use a sata expansion card (pci is too slow for sata, and pci-express cards are pricey).
interested?
my dad has a desktop computer, but he recently got a thinkpad. he still leaves the desktop on as a print server. i'm trying to get him to buy a printer with integrated networking (like the
brother hl2170w) so he can save on his power bill ($50/year).
i can probably get it to you for very cheap. it's three years old (exactly!).

i think i will opt for minimalism for now, but thanks for the offer!
if i get anything it would probably be some kind of nas or torrent box that's somewhat portable. i'll post up the description, requirements, and choices. i do have to use those dual 250's after all. also i recently got donated a maxtor 500 gig from one of my clients! so i'm in the process of a major backup and data cleaning. my 2008 photo backups are kind of crazy.
back to work.

problem with capacitors... is when they blow... they tend to temporarily operate well outside their listed operational parameters... which in turn can mean a lot of bad stuff for the circuit they are in... and the components of it.
bangs can also be regulators blowing... and man do they make a noise when they blow.
Does your PSU have a fuse? Hope it does.
Sadly these days PSU manufacturers go out of their way to design boards that are difficult to service. I don't know why they do this.... but surely enough they do.
i kinda want to replace the fan in my psu with a super-quiet one

Which will work as long as it doesn't detect the fan is out...
if it does you need to make sure the load of the two fans is similar.
isn't that why god invented multimeters? :)
thanks for the tip. i can just add some resistors to the new fan to make the load identical, right?

well it depends on if the psu can even figure out if there's no fan attached.
you might wanna check that first.
will do.
but resistors would be all it would need at the most, yeah?

unless it has some form of fan speed detector... usually a third cable... servers and cpu fans tend to have these.
