what do you have?
provider: t-mobile
plan: even more plus
minutes: 500, unlimited nights and weekends
sms: unlimited
data: unlimited
cost: $60/month
I just switched to this today! I had to pay a 35 dollar fee since I am on a $70/month plan with 300 minutes until some time in 2011, but saving 10 bucks a month is worth it. I'm still on a contract until 2011 but after that the even more plus plans don't have any contract at all! the only downside is you don't get discounted phone upgrades, but I rarely wait for the end of contract discount anyway.
also, I think I am going to buy a nexus one today, assuming they are for sale and I can get one.
damn, so expensive.
provider: verizon
plan: family plan (5 phones)
minutes: 1400 , unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited verizon calls, unlimited calls to 10 'friends and family' (including my google voice number that gives me free call forwarding)
sms: unlimited
data: none
cost: $27/month (for me, and I think I am paying a larger proportion than 1/5)
that said. verizon is evil. if you accidentally click on the browser button in your uncustomizable phone, they will charge you, even if your total data transfer is less than 1K.

yeah, verizon is pretty awful about their phones. at least they have the droid now. but if you're not in the cell phone data boat then it sucks.
I use prepaid. (Vodafone w/ Samsung B2700)

I bought the nexus one! it should arrive today.
Phone: Nokia 1661
Provider: Virgin Mobile
Plan: Pay as you Go
Cost: A lot.
My sister may be able to give me a more high tech Nokia which is on T-Mobile, I prefer T-Mobile.

I love being able to receive calls too much to switch away from verizon.
other providers don't support receiving calls?

in nyc... they do not.

I would think nyc would be well-covered. t-mobile is perfectly fine in boston. when I go to the suburbs it's iffy in small areas but I can usually walk like 20 feet in one direction and get an OK signal.

only complaint so far is that the mytouch came with a screen protector and this didn't :(.
> in nyc... they do not.
well then i'm going to avoid renewing my contract until i see what schools give me offers.
provider: rogers
minutes: 200, unlimited evenings (6pm) and weekends
sms: unlimited
data: 500MB
cost: cad$70/month + cad$7.45 system access & 911 fees
you guys think your companies are evil?!

I'm thinking I'll wait to renew until after I move, too.
>you guys think your companies are evil?!
i think that cell phone companies in the US are doing back door deals to illegally gouge consumers. proving it is another thing. have you guys been watching the verizon vs. t-mobile commercials. ever wonder why it is that if the two companies are competing so intensively, why neither of them are offering dramatic price cuts?
also, if you look at contract cost several years ago i think you will find that the costs are approximately the same as they are today. however most providers have many more customers than they did five years ago. being how most of the costs associated with providing cell phone service are fixed, i would think that if cell phone companies were behaving competitively, then contract costs would have dropped substantially.
plus, terrible customer service in general and annoying contracts. competitive firms work hard to keep their customers satisfied. my provider (verizon) does not.
well, for example, MC of text messages is virtually zero. competition should have (in theory) driven P to MC. but with many providers, P=$0.25.
night and weekend minutes are free (8kbps), but 160 bytes cost $0.25. you can send six full-length texts per second and consume less bandwidth than a phone call.
Phone: LG Xenon
Provider: AT&T
Plan: Same as Aled - Pay as you go
Cost: duz u realie nede 2 no???

AT&T and T-Mobile are definitely evil. They have very robust and continuing histories of support for totalitarianism as well the a complete lack of regard for basic human rights.
Lot's of people don't realize T-Mobile is Deutsche Telecom.

any examples? I'm curious.

This is different from $random_large_company in what way exactly?

I agree in sentiment, but there are shades of gray worth considering more heavily than others I think.

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
provider: Cricket
plan: $25 Basic
minutes: Unlimited
sms: Unlimited
data: None.
cost: $25/month
(Can get 3G with their $45 plan, unlimited access as well.)
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
I switched to their (discounted-from-$45) $40 plan. Unlimited 3G access and extended service area, which is fine by me. And the activation fee was $15. And if I don't want it anymore, then I just stop paying.
I really hate cell service providers, though. Shit like
this just pisses me off.

Will my rate plan change because of the acquisition?
We will honor all customer contracts entered into before the change of ownership.
this concerns me. I'm on a non-contract plan. currently considering radically changing my phone service and doing prepaid or finding the cheapest plan.
I wish I could get Cricket here.

I've heard some good things lately about Virgin Mobile's prepaid plan... Maybe they changed it up or something.

I think you have to buy one of their phones to use it :/.

I think my best bet is buying a cheap feature phone from a cdma carrier like metropcs or boostmobile and getting the cheapest plan they offer. this sucks.
but I guess this is all assuming at&t makes t-mobile jack up my no-contract monthly rate.
i'll give you a cdma phone for free
