I've just redone my resume using the bitstream vera serif font ... It looks OK, but would like something really pretty that stands out ...

I use the LaTeX version of Palatino (package ``mathpazo''). See also Adobe Palatino LT Std Roman (store). I use mathpazo because it's the most well supported old-style serif font by LaTeX and it is free.
I'd also consider Adobe Minion Pro Regular (store). I love H&F-J Mercury, but I cannot afford it.

notice that minion is a professional font, and it contains any glyph that you can imagine. you can do anything with it. and it's only $35!

i often use cutepdf which renders it in helvetica.

my choice of face is more a function of my field rather than anything else
helvetica is a nice face anyway
