When you look at the design of the freescale tablet reference design... you see simple, elegant, beauty. When you look at the specs, you see forward thinking brilliance and a butt load of features... and then when you look at the cost... you see a 299 dollar price point.
Then apple comes along and releases pictures of a fairly ugly looking tablet, in spite of it's sparse design points.
Running on a locked down non multitasking OS. Where application development is best described as a total crapshoot.
And utterly lacking in features that were not only expected, but necessary for the device to compete in a market that's beginning to explode.

i shared your view on its usefulness, and then i watched their official promo video. browsing the net on it (not typing or anything) looks amazing.

That FreeScale tablet is ugly.

IMHO the whole "pad" is a rather useless device. What exactly are you going to do with it? It's too big to be portable, too small to be useful as a real workstation. Reading books will wreak havoc on your eyes (Backlight), and browsing the web will be painful w/o a proper keyboard IMO.

They bought a couple trial units where I work and I got to play with one for a little bit. It has a nice screen and weight but it is a little slow. Did spend some time and we got XenDesktop with win 7 working on it :)

used one at the mac repair shop the other day.. was kind of disappointed with the speed. the keyboard is fucking hard to get used to typing on, and a lot of the apps were scaled up to fit the ipad screen and they looked like balls. but you have the option to shrink them down to "normal" size. I thought this was kind of lame. and maybe i was using it wrong, but the screen rotation was more annoying than convenient. browsing the internet was okay, but typing text in the fields was difficult for me.. i made lots of typos because of the keyboard and spent like 5x longer to fix all the errors (mostly because there aren't any arrow keys that I saw). Clicking on the exact part of text that I wanted to edit was the most difficult, but then again i don't have much experience with touch text.
however it has nice weight and pretty screen, so it would be nice to watch movies on or to show a portfolio.

i'd first look at products that aren't primarily used as a vehicle for a storefront, so that they have an incentive to make pdf viewing the best possible experience and internet browsing the best (without trying to gather data and sell you shit)

iPad with retina display is so sweet to me. I don't get why you guys hate on this tablet! I will say this though ... I have yet to find an amazing terminal editor or SSH client. :(
