for some reason, i thought that satellite communications linked the continents. of course, this would mean that all inter-continental traffic would be very latent--and it's not. i've never reconciled these thoughts until now.

My brother has actually been inside one of the cable junction rooms in NYC. CRAZY HIGH VOLTAGE.
Actually if you are in NYC check out the two "ghost" buildings. AT&T built these two buildings to house the cross continental interconnects way back in like cold war times. They are massive windowless, lightless skyscrapers. Only discernible features are massive vents. No running lights at all on the buildings ... in theory to make them hard to bomb at night.

Actually during the Haiti disaster they were attempting to run a 10 gig fiber line from costa rica to haiti using a donated cable layer ship. Dunno if they did it.
