This news is a few days old. But Microsoft has recently scrapped their current windows Vista project and are starting over from scrach. Programmers were already protesting and they were having a hell of a time getting all the code to work so they decided it was best to start over. I cant imagine how much time and money they wasted trying to get stuff to work.

vista schmista. i have a relevant clipping from the wsj from last friday(9/23/05), check it:

"Slow Delivery
Amid delays to the next version of Windows Microsoft is battling to stay abreast of rivals.

October 2003: Microsoft announces "WinFS," a plan to make it easier in the next version of Windows to store and find information on their PCs.

July 2004: Google says it plans to introduce a desktop search program that approximates WinFS functions.

August 2004: Microsoft removes WinFS from next version of Windows.

October 2004: Google Desktop Search software released over Internet.

April 2005: Apple Computer ships Mac operating system with desktop search.

August 2005: Microsoft ships test version of WinFS earlier than expected, says final version might be add-on to Windows rather than an integral part."

the article describes the contention with the programmers. it explains how Jim Allchin, senior corp exec talked to Gates regarding Longhorn saying it would not work.

i also read an article in business week magazine regarding Microsofts mass defections. including an explination from Kai-Fu Lee of why he moved along. there was also a lengthy section on mini-microsoft, the blogger, that was kind of interesting. article dated 9/26/05.
