I may be up there... depending on how the year plays out. a friend is trying to do an installation this year.
If I only bring one lens, which one should I bring? (18-55 kit, 35, 55-200 vr)
um.. 18-55mm on dx sounds good! the 18mm should be good for architectural shots, and the 55mm will be decent for portraiture.
I only brought my 35 with me on my Interrail trip. Worked out great.

I use 18-55 myself as a generic.
18-55 it is.

No.
Bring the long zoom. You're taking photos of far away things, and possibly people. I don't think you'll require a wide lens for the vast majority of the time!
andyp
nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
35 :D is it a f1.8?
yes, it is.

oh shit, nestor, you mighta started somethin' here :-o
so now i should bring the 55-200?
edit: i suppose i could bring two lenses. which should i bring then? (note i depart london for toronto around 11 am eastern).

Bring the longer zoom and the fast 35. That's my suggestion if you are willing to bring two!

I suggest you just bring Etrangere and let her handle the photography, while you run amok.
he's going to be hundreds of yards away from the taj (55-200mm)? or will he be fairly close (18-55mm)?
i guess i don't understand how architectural photography works.

Yeah take me! I promise I will make myself useful.
You are not allowed to take photos of the Taj within the inner courtyard area. You can only photograph it from the outer doors, which are several hundred yards away (this is why nearly everyone who sees the Taj comes home with almost identical photos of the reflecting pool and the Taj in the distance)
> Yeah take me! I promise I will make myself useful.
i'm sure he will if you pay your own way. :)
> You can only photograph it from the outer doors, which are several hundred yards away
this is typical of indian archiecture? i literally cannot imagine using 200mm on dx format to photograph a building.
maple
i like large datasets
where in india are you going nestor?

The Taj is special, it gets its own set of rules. :) But really photographing from a bit farther away with a zoom is preferable because you get minimal perspective distortion.
well, i brought the 18-55 and the 55-200. i probably shoulda brought the 35 though. oh well
i've gone through delhi, jaipur, now in jodhpur, then going to agra, varanasi, then going to a village in the punjab, amritsar, chandigarh, shimla or dharamsala, manali, leh
some slight modifications to the itinerary are possible

Did you already say why you're taking this grand tour of India? If so I missed it. Just vacation or...?
vacation, mostly. not a yoga tour or anything.
> But really photographing from a bit farther away with a zoom is preferable because you get minimal perspective distortion.
i don't believe in perspective distortion. it's just a different perspective.
..unless you're talking about barrel distortion. in which case, you just need a better lens.

Don't mention you feel that way if you ever apply for a commercial photography job :-o
why?
"distorted" implies that there exists an undistorted perspective. there are none; they are all relative.

There is the one true absolute perspective.... Mine.

Conventional businesses will generally ask for the least "distorted" perspective, in order to escape "false advertising." I know exactly what you're saying, but they are trying for perspectives that most closely mirror the human eye.
For instance, the first question my real estate company asked when I told them I had purchased a new lens was "Fantastic! Just as long as it doesn't make the spaces look larger than they are." And I do think they're right; it's important for some businesses to avoid appearing misleading with their imagery.

In NYC misleading is kinda the goal... =/
