I was reading something about conficker and remembered this. still really neat.
hah.my work wouldnt allow me to say it at the time but that windows machine was one of ours.
when i took over as the sys admin they gave me all the old guys stuff and access to all the servers (like 20 maybe). but apparently there was this other one (the one that got hacked) that the guy before me forgot about or just didn't document for whatever reason. i was doing some house cleaning with our hosting company and saw that shit wasn't matching up and finally found it. highly out of date on security patches and shit. IIRC it ran some images for beyonce's website page.
sidenote: Beyonce's myspace page had so much traffic that I had a dedicated freebsd box running lighttpd strictly to serve the background image of her page. pushed something like 3-5 terrabytes of data a month. for a 50-100k image. i forgot to turn off logging for lighttpd and it filled up the /var within like 2 weeks. never noticed because the image was still running on her page. found it like 2-3 months later. freebsd just kept on chugging without a usable /var partition.

Yeah, freebsd is a BEAST. We had a freebsd box fully kernel dump on us... the freaking routing being done off it... JUST KEPT GOING. Including the failover interfaces.
Eventually we rebooted it, but it was amazing to watch.
