history:
ipod mini 4gb - gift, replaced once and sold
ipod 4th gen 20 gb - andyp's old one. battery is dying
creative muvo 256 mb - giveaway, works great but is annoying to refill all the time.
now:
i want a 'low tech' type solution for biking and every day use.
i want something mostly small but with decent storage.
some kind of screen to display tracks but not much more.
i prefer it to play flac but it's not necessary.
i've been on the hunt and came across the sansa clip+ with great reviews. but at around $60 for 8 gb (though it is expandable via sdhc) i'm still open to other options.
does anything come to mind as a potential solution?
thanks

hmm. this is an interesting market because there is a good amount of non-apple stuff. I will be watching this thread.
I was going to suggest the Sanse Clip until I saw you'd already heard of it. I still think it's your best bet.
I am considering replacing my iPod nano 3g with the sansa clip+.
I like that you can put sdhc cards in it. It's also very small (I went to a shop which had them in stock). The pricing is also very good.
Here is a rather nice site btw:

I used a sansa for my hand grenade mp3 player. Great little devices.

my lady has a sansa and she loves it; it's not a "clip". the only issue i have is that directory navigation while listening is a bit counter-intuitive.
I have a sansa clip. First version. It's good.

nothing is wrong - what are you scared of?
I have the new ipod shuffle.. I probably would not recommend it mostly because of the dumb proprietary earpods :o
Bought a Sansa clip+ last weekend to replace my failing iPod nano 3G, installed rockbox on it. The device is 20 times better with rockbox IMHO, works superb!
well, i'm thinking about getting a sansa clip+. they're dirt cheap (
4gb is $42,
8gb is $58), so i may as well just try one out.
how does the audio quality compare to similar devices?
do many of you (besides cs) run rockbox on it?
i'm impressed that the default firmware supports flac! :D
I found the audio quality of the Nano 3g a bit better. I would rate the nano3g a 9. The clip+ a 7.5 (On a scale of 10).
Audio quality of rockbox vs. default firmware doesn't seem to matter.
Doesn't matter that much for me, since I use it mostly on my bike, and I'm dealing with noise from wind, cars, etc. anyway.
well, that's disheartening.
I forgot to update. I won one of these on a bidding site for a few dollars. It's only 4gb but I added a 16 gig microsd card. I didn't try rockbox yet!

Rockbox always worked well on my first-gen iPod Nano. Yay for FLAC support!
which did you win, dp?
sansa clip+
nice. i wouldn't mind one of those things.

carpetsmokers comments on the sound quality of the sansa clip have convinced me to not to buy one. I should probably just search harder for my ipod.
turns out the clip+'s clip isn't very strong, the player fell off my bike's mp3 player mount.
now my clip+ power button is broken. it's perma-depressed. i have to plug in usb to turn it on.
I had the same problem when just turning it off!
It was in warranty, and got a new one.
i'll check my warranty too.
turns out i like riding without headphones a lot of times anyway. and it's not particularly safe with noise cancelling iem's :/
but it won't stop me doing it on paved trails heh.

dp: I recently found my Zune, so I went for a ride while listening to music. I ended up turning it off after about half an hour. Riding without them was so much nicer.

listening to music while biking is so much fun.
I really can't figure out what I did with my ipod and it's killing me.
the clip+ has great sound quality. read around, and you'll find that it's audiophiles' favorite cheap mp3 player. they're $40, so if it breaks, you can just buy another or get warranty service.

ok I'm getting one. I haven't had an mp3 player for like a month now.
have yet to try rockbox

rockbox was great on my ipod mini. I'll probably install it on this too.
I'm using my N900 for music now. And I do agree, music while biking is awesome!
Most phones have an absolutely awful sound quality.

the iphone is an exception though! ipods have always had pretty great sound quality too. one thing that I give apple credit for.

ipod earbuds? because when my foam pads fell off I bought cheapy new earbuds and they were about 10x better-sounding, imo

not the earbuds. just the players themselves. no one who knows anything uses those earbuds.
got my clip+ today!
iPod earbuds are complete shit.

I want a Clip+ now ... but I found my Zune the other day! *happy*

clip+ with rockbox is pretty great.
I use that combo too. I'm glad you like it!

My former better-half still has my 1st gen iPod Nano with Rockbox on it. Rockbox makes everything better.
I think Rockbox really shows the strength of open-source software written by enthusiastic hobbyists. Where the default is "good enough", rockbox is "the best we can possibly make it".
This is one reason why Linux is such crap at certain points. Most Linux development isn't done by enthusiastic hobbyists anymore.
i lost my 4gb purple sansa clip+ that cost me $40 on amazon. i think i either left it on the amtrak train or at dannyp's house.
i just bought a 2gb black sansa clip+ for $30 on amazon for replacement.
Mine had a loose headphone jack, lots of distortions in the sound.
I opened it up (with my leatherman, not very smart) and a tiny connection of the headphone jack to the system board was loose.
I soldered it up again, not sure if I did it right, it seems better at first glance though ... The connection is so tiny weeny tiny it's almost impossible to solder (... for me anyway ...).
I need to close it up but kinda demolished the casing ... I'll probably duct tape it (I'm not cool enough to make it into a hand grenade like nny ;-)).

honestly... inside the grenade i have it wrapped in electrical tape to protect the solder points and avoid grounding onto the grenade itself. So you'd be very similar.
Minus the grenade.
