I erm, I'm not really into computers anymore.

I gave it up and am very interested in Mechanical Engineering.

mechanical engineering is way cooler.

you can still apply tons of ee / comp knowledge there. but... ROBOTS

Yeah true

At the moment I'm quite interested in small engines, like what you'd get on a cylinder mower, they're simple to work on and make learning about engines that bit simpler.

I'd like to learn how to weld, I have quite a few friends who are engineers and have access to the equipment, so it shouldn't be difficult for me to get to learn. I also need to learn to use a lathe, which I can do in college :D

What'd be interesting to make is an old style minibike, with mild steel tube frame and a 3-5hp horizontal shaft engine.

there are in many cities non collegiate groups who do this sort of thing. look into burners / artists / bike modding groups... or hacker spaces.

In nyc I know of at least 3 places willing to teach you welding for low low fees and in some cases specifically bike modification related engineering.

Additionally... I have a really fun book from the 50s by MIT press on servo motor design. The math is horrendous =P
