Who needs pagination if you can just create new threads.
normal form needs it
Who needs normal when we've got ttf?

got bummed and stoked and bummed about lack of pagination
last night, i was thinking about how to implement pagination into the design.
bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
> how to implement pagination into the design.
one way would be to reverse the order of posts in a thread, show only the first 10-15, then load more as the user scrolls down. i'm partial to this since it's how google reader works when i read ttf anyway :)
i thought about keeping the endless page and doing ajax loading like that. but i want to keep ttfv1 javascript-free.
Chiken
Don't Let Your Walls Down
couldn't you make it like an optional feature for each user? where in our profile settings if we check some box then we will get the javascript version, but by default it loads the non javascript version?
yeah, but i don't want to maintain two versions of the site. js will be in ttfv2 on thinktankforum.com.
OK, BSDLITE, i could just do MVC and have two sets of views. but i still don't wanna. ttf's strength and speed is in linearity. :p
bsdlite

:D
Nothing wrong with javascript, as long as it's used wisely and stuff also works with javascript disabled
bsdlite
thinks darkness is his ally
> works with javascript enabled
i agree it's important to have appropriate input cleaning, data processing, etc, on the backend, but i've always thought the "people can disable javascript" cry was a bit overblown. it sounds like only around
2-3 percent of US users (and even fewer EU users) actually do this. likely
fewer people disable javascript than use opera or even safari.
just like with flash, images, css, etc you have to make a compatibility judgement call at some point!
You're right, there is no "golden rule". It's a cost/benefit ratio.
Maybe it's better formulated as:
"As long as essential site functionality works with javascript disabled."
Also remember that Javascript isn't a "on/off switch", there are quite a few browsers out there that are still being used with very incomplete or (semi-)broken javascript implementations (*cough* IE *cough*).
For a personal website you may not care about retards with prehistoric browsers, but for a company website it's a potential loss of income. And spending 2 hours making sure essential stuff doesn't break down may be a good investment in the long run ...
For example, on our current company website
http://aragorn.nl/?p=3 this select element breaks down with javascript enabled, this element is used to navigate to product categories in our webshop and is fairly essential.
On the new website I created, I made sure this also works with javascript disabled. Which took only a couple of minutes ...
For other stuff like some fancy graphical effects I didn't put as much effort -- As long as it doesn't crash and burn or do other weird stuff ...

I went to a pho place today. It wasn't a good one, and I knew that, but my toes were cold and it was closer than the better one down the street. I walked in and stood there for a few minutes before a guy noticed me. He pointed at a table w/out saying a word to me, then left. I sat there for ~5 more minutes without anyone coming over (pho places are usually extremely fast about everything) so I stood up, put on my coat, and walked toward the door. Another employee suddenly noticed me and goes "YOU WANT TO ORDER?" ultra-fucking loud so everyone turned to stare at me. So I took advantage of the attention and replied across the room to her "Not anymore. I'm going to the better place down the street."
I noticed a few subtle smiles at me as I left. :o

Getting $1,675 back on my return. :D
Also, I reinstalled Debian to get rid of encrypted-LVM (a fun experiment, but it was very resource intensive), so I got a fresh install ... so nice. Finally made the switch from xterm to rxvt-unicode, as well as actually setting up scripts to begin various programs correctly at boot. Right now I'm editing login scripts because the default Debian installation starts GNOME when you log in and I'm trying to discourage that behavior in an OS. Right now it starts up dwm, but X hangs when I quit dwm... hrm.
That being said, I miss BSD. :(
bsd misses you. go back to it!
phi_

How's flash support nowadays in BSD? I need it for school, it's one of the reasons I went with linux. Also, I believe there's some hardware in my eeePC that wasn't supported when I ditched Windows, so I'll need to double check on that first anyway.
At first I was okay with Debian ... but after seeing comments in configuration files that even *I* feel are unprofessional, I just started remembering why I moved to BSD in the first place. At least everything is standardized in BSD. Well, almost everything, I've had a few applications behave weirdly, but they were probably GNU ports anyway.
asemisldkfj

I miss bsd.
I think the first time I installed debian I accidentally got the version or whatever you call it with gnome and I was a little peeved.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
The standard/default graphical install includes GNOME. I want to leave it on here for guests, but GDM is such a god-damned mess (hahaha, that also spells GDM) that I ditched it and installed SLiM. Much simpler. I just wrote an Xsession script (well, I renamed and tweaked my original xinitrc) and SLiM runs that when you log in. GDM will do that too, but it was a nightmare to get it working properly.
> I've had a few applications behave weirdly, but they were probably GNU ports anyway.

> How's flash support nowadays in BSD?
It works for FreeBSD/Opera. Using the native Opera and linux-pluginwrapper.
It works but not as good/fast as you would have on Solaris for example (Only other UNIX I ever used flash with).

I dont think its that cut and dried.
well, i say that because it hasn't proven beneficial, and some people hurt themselves (badly) by stretching cold muscles too aggressively
but i guess if you aren't too aggressive and your cold muscles are used to it, then go for it.
straining warm muscles by stretching, in comparison, is very difficult to do. stretching after a workout makes a world of difference with aches in the following 24 hours.

what's the make/model, phi_?
well, I was going to go for a nice ride today and realized that my front brake was kind of seizing up. the fluid probably hasn't been changed in a very long time. me and my friend (mostly him) took the whole front caliper off and one of the pistons was REALLY in there. we got one out with an air compressor but the other we had to force out with some pliers. so I guess I'm rebuilding most of the front brake system (new pistons, piston seals, dust seals, and a master cylinder rebuild kit).
I did get my new mufflers on today and they are 100 times better than the straight pipes (which aren't legal anyway). mild exhaust leak on one side, but I can seal that up somehow and it's not really a big deal anyway.
so if you're cool with doing all this (assuming you get a used, somewhat older bike) it's worth it! I like doing this kind of stuff anyway.

Wrote the following programs in C for this no-window-manager environment:
fullscreen.c - you select the window, fullscreen maximizes it.
dummy.c - creates a 1x1 window in the top left corner, waits for a mouse click in the window, then exits. Use it to keep the Xsession open until it exits (last line in .xinitrc).
warp.c - warps the mouse pointer to the bottom-right of the screen to get it out of the way.
resize.c - repurposed the resizewindow (...) function in dwm to resize the selected window.
Working on move.c at the moment, if you can imagine what it does. :p

Today I did
flying trapeze with two friends! This is the warm-up where we practiced swinging by our knees.
The process was: grab bar from standing position up high, jump off, tuck legs up and get knees over bar, release hands and stretch out upside down, grab bar again with hands, uncurl legs and drop them down again, then a backflip to dismount! All while swinging wildly. :D

sure. if you think about it, and i mean really consider it. metric makes no damned sense at all.
a base ten system is severely limited. the base 12 of standard/imperial is far more versatile. you can halve, quart, and third very easily. But I'd advocate for a base 16 system myself.
Metric never made any sense at all and the people who advocated for it were retarded.

Don't Let Your Walls Down
an update on my last terrible things done post:
Parent's found my girlfriends dog at the cooke city trail head this evening just as they were leaving. The dog has been in the beartooth wilderness alone for almost 7 days now. The last sighting of him we had was 3 days ago. He's had to of gone 60 miles total (including the initial 26 to east rosebud).
It's just kind of funny though, girlfriend gets a call from hikers in the the morning that he's at the wilderness boundary. she calls her dad, her sister and him rush up there and walk in to the wilderness boundary but don't find him. My parent's also were up there, totally on their own. They knew max was lost in the area and knew nothing about the call my girlfriend got, now did they see her dad and sister at all through the day. My parent's went 6 miles in and saw nothing. They get out and are about to let our dog run down to the little lake when all of a sudden they notice another dog down there and realize it was max. All this at the trail head is happening literally 10 minutes after my girlfriends family gets out.
It was kind of like something out of a movie. But, everyone's happy that the dog is back safe and sound. Especially me, so that the gf can stop sulking around.

Tree in my backyard has been cut down, so yesterday morning I woke up about 8AM, grabbed my hatchet, and began cutting and stripping branches to have a DIY day.
So far:
- hammer
- walking stick for friend's son
Planned:
- quarter-staff for other friend
- new hatchet handle
After all that, I went on a 3+ hour walk with a friend of mine along all the creeks and bayous in this area. :D

Started a business.
My first job is installing a network cable.
tell us more!
A friend of mine runs Bitraf (Oslo's largest [by volume] hackerspace), see
http://bitraf.no (here's me testing a car I made out of steel wire:
http://bitraf.no/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/D … 24x654.jpg ).
He wants a better Internet connection than the DSL he's got there now. The cost of a fiber optic subscription is pretty high, so he decided to set up his own ISP for the office building that the hackerspace is in.
He wants me to run the cables to the other offices. He could employ me, but then he'd have to pay employment tax, which would go out of my salary. Instead I started a business so I can bill him.
Now that I've got the business, I might try to get some freelance work, too.

lots of folks in NYC have a tax ID for work like this as well. but the reasons are usually liability related.
California has made this difficult to do inside the state due to incredibly piss poor tax regulations. The result is California is slowly driving it's economic base out of it's own state. And thus Austin and NYC are now tech hubs.
It's amazing to watch the results of bad bureaucracy.
It might be interesting to know that I did not have to touch a piece of paper to start the business. I just logged in to the government's site (with personal ID number, password and a code sent to my cellphone), spent about ten minutes filling out a form, and signed it by clicking a button.
odd because when i rank this data by "ease of starting business" norway is #41
http://www.doingbusiness.org/rankings
Who knows what numbers they compare to get that ranking, and how they get those numbers.
based on the pdf and my general knowledge of corporate law, i'm guessing they measured # procedures, # days, % of annual income per capita in fees, and minimum capital required to start an "ASA" or "AS", best analogues being public corporation and LLC in the US
Ah, well, I didn't start any of those. I started an ENK, a single person business. I guess it's a little more work starting a publicly tradable company (ASA or AS).

This is a real problem in the Netherlands IMHO. By far the biggest problem is the way taxes work (it's complicated). I would have started a business long ago if it wouldn't be so much work (it also costs quite a bit of money).
Sometimes this country is retarded.

greece was pretty fucked up - in the sense that the economy is obviously in awful, awful shape. businesses on every street are closed / buildings for rent. even in tourist towns, we stayed in high-end hotels for about 60 eur (20 eur / pp) and we were the only people in them.
no riots, apparently those are mostly in athens. people are super nice, it was a great trip.
election this weekend!

Arch "updated" to systemd ... back to BSD it is!
Arch doesn't even have an installer anymore, they had a fine installer but removed it a few months ago.
If you start the "installer" CD, you will just be greeted with a shell prompt. It's up yo you to discover the INSTALL in the /root/ directory (not even a motd to point you at this).
You're then supposed to manually fdisk and install your system according to very vague and general instructions provided in the INSTALL file...
Not too long ago ArchLinux was considered to be "the most BSD Linux" by many...
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
Yeah, I was running 2010.9 (I think?) ... the motd told you to run /arch/install or something along those lines and it had a really solid CLI installer.
They don't even do that? AND you have to manually partition the drive? I mean, I don't really mind having to do that as I've done it plenty of time in the past, but it seems completely unnecessary in 2012 for an end-user distro like Arch to not provide at least a suggested partitioning scheme like BSD does.
I finally broke down to try and update when NOTHING would install from pacman because of the upgrades to udev et al, and once I saw systemd I went straight to FreeBSD. Now if only the linux emulation would install easily... but I can deal without Flash 11 for the time being.

Fucking Arch fucked me over royally last week. I have moved to Slackware. X11 would not start. AT ALL! When I typed in startx, it hard locked my mac. WTF man. This was on a CLEAN INSTALL. Guess I'm a fucking slacker now. Getting used to slackbuilds is a pain in the ass.

I got my FirePro card installed ... now downloading the ridiculously large ISV drivers for Premiere Pro.
they have application-specific drivers? that seems nuts
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
The major DCC and CAD software has special drivers for workstation graphics cards (Quadro, FirePro, Matrox, etc) ... hence the ridiculous price tag on the cards. It's a scam, but hardware acceleration on these kinds of programs is necessary.
Oh! Fun thing about those ISV drivers--totally crashed Premiere Pro CC. Wouldn't even load. Had to take them back out and install the up-to-date generic ATI Windows drivers to get it to load. It's gonna be fun trying to figure that mess out.
i hate driver messes. sounds like a pita.
phi_
... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
They are. Since I don't do any 3D work, or medical imaging, I don't need the power-hungry cards... and hardware acceleration is way worth the hassle, but my computer as-is can handle almost all my needs without considerably slowing down. It's a small pita that I can deal with at leisure.
