Currently I have a 17" LCD + thinkpad T410 with advanced mini dock. I am constantly switching windows and running out of space. I have to work between about six windows driving text between them with copy/paste.

I think the cheapest option to get more screen space would be to use my personal thinkpad (T61) with a dock (I can probably find one to use at work), crossover, and synergy. http://synergy-foss.org/ has anyone used it?

Alternatively I could buy a huge monitor, or two. Some of the dudes here have dual 30's. I know this wouldn't be cheap and normally we will get monitor upgrades with better work performance, so I am unlikely to buy monitors. Being here daily for hours stacked on hours though it might be worth it? I'm holding off for now, I'll just be alt-tabbing constantly.

Has anyone done ICS between two laptops where the hosted laptop is on a domain? I just want to be able to easily push/pull files locally, and have both computers use one's internet.

I'm curious as to whether the ethernet connection on the dock disables the ethernet on the laptop, or if it constitutes a second ethernet port. I know with the display it does not drive both dock VGA and laptop VGA ports simultaneously (although the advanced mini dock itself supports DVI and VGA simultaneously).

proposed setup:
t61-eth0 -> disabled
t61-wi0 -> disabled
t61-dock-eth1 -> t410-eth0
t410-dock eth1 -> work-network
t410-wi0 -> work-network

otherwise i could wifi the thinkpads and use the t410-dock-eth1 -> work-network. but that would usurp redundancy. :(

lastly i could bring in a spare router (SOEKRIS?) and hook it up at my desk.

Maybe you can slap together some time-saving macros with something like autohotkey?

For example if you have 6 windows, you can assign a hotkey for focusing each one ...

Total costs: $0.

Yeah, works pretty well.

I love my 30 inch at home. It is like the perfect size.

CS: I read about the tool (autohotkeys) a while ago on lh, it might be good for my purposes. Will it be able to pick an application, like I can have a hotkey for each Chrome/Browser window? Most of my tools are webbased. I saw an interesting project, which I can't seem to find again. In this tool you could program graphical matches for fields and do various programming actions. It's kind of like macros with the aid of GUI visual matching to perform actions in around or from.

note: I found a reference to autohotkey use by fsmart on ttf.

I wish I could automate a lot more of what I do, but as I said many of the tools are webbased. I can't just write a script to duplicate source information from here to there, enter certain parts of that data in other fields on another tool in an automated fashion. I mean I could, but it wouldn't be with accuracy, it would fail most of the time given the options I have considered. So I'm stuck with manually copying/pasting things one by one, or chunk by chunk.

As a result I thought about improving my copying/pasting. I never thought I would consider copy/paste a hindrance but there must be some better solutions to make these marginal tasks even faster. I found a few applications that might help, still just in discovery phase for this.

I think the best for me would be: select-copy with click-paste, and an option to menu-paste. A feature to paste all recent would be nice, and purge clipboard.
copy/paste managers:

    Shapeshifter    http://flamefusion.net/Software/Shapeshifter/Default.aspx
    TxMouse http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/nt/TXMouse/ (select to copy, middle-click to paste)

I saw several custom keyboards with programmable buttons with copy and paste functions while clicking through links on geekhack forums. I think that would be pretty nice.

I used TXMouse for a while. Would still be using it if our ERP software didn't suck so much (Doesn't fucking work with even basic fucking shit as ^C/^V, aaaarrrgggghhhh. TXmouse breaks it completely).

autohotkey can pretty much send any key you want, you can raise a window by title and them send some hotkey to activate a certain tab or menu ...

I can't comment on most of your thread but I can say that i'm very happy that I switched to multiple monitors. I had two but I still spent so much time bringing up outlook that I got a third just for it.

how are you connecting 3 monitors to your single laptop?

Sorry for the confusion i put standalone because it is not connected there is a Dell 380 behind them. I used to take my laptop around with me but rdp has become so much faster. I can vpn into work and connect with rdp in 14.5seconds.

As it turns out, the thinkpad onboard ethernet becomes disabled when docked. I'm using a T410 and advanced mini dock 3. Looks like I'll be using wireless to ICS the two, foregoing redundancy.

So here's how I set it up:

t61-eth0 -> disabled
t61-wi0 -> disabled

t410-eth0 -> disabled
t61-dock-eth1 -> t410-dock eth1 (auto-sensing ftw! thought i was going to have to find a crossover)
t410-wi0 -> work-network

ICS on t410-wi0's work-network to t410-dock-eth1. ICS doesn't like user-configured static IP's much, it just sort of man handles your settings. I had to adjust T61's network, which remained static.

I set up synergy and tried it via wireless at first to keep the internet/work-network connection on ethernet, but the delay for the mouse was too slow for me to bear, most likely because of the encryption, probably the throughput difference too.

So far I'm pretty satisfied with it all! Now I need a shared drive on the local network! Still considering clipboard managers.

I made a share on my T61; "S:\" for sisyphus!

Copy/pasting between computers works fine with synergy! maybe i should still try using txmouse for select-copy.

Next going for desk space optimization, heat reduction, and screen leveling. elevate the two laptops.
