They all suck at the moment. They only have one 4g and it's pretty underwhelming. You may want to wait for the next few to come out.
ok, that's what i heard from a friend, as well.
I was prepared to buy one, but then I saw the dual core from AT&T and the performance is so much better than the Droids (Incredible, X, Pro). iPhone 4 is nice and all performance wise (sw & hw), but not my style.
I played with the Palm Pre 2 that my friend got, he returned it because it was just too proprietary. When I used it, it seemed fairly hot too.
I'd like to play with the ThunderBolt. Another friend has the Fascinate (well the Captivate model on AT&T). He likes it alright but he wouldn't mind an upgrade with newer android versions capabilities.
I generally like my N900, but those new Android phones seem really fast.
what about:
samsung droid charge
motorola droid x2
I would at least wait for the Samsung Galaxy II or the new quad core Nexus coming out this summer/fall. They say that the new quad core chip coming out for phones should be right around the corner. I'm referring to Tegra 3.
If you really want to get your android craze and wait for an new epic phone then just get an Motorola Droid off of Ebay or Craiglist. They sell relatively around $120 or lower and you can usually get a shitload of accessories with them. Just make sure the ESN is clean, otherwise you will be using it as an PMP.
Also, if you are really into technology and other random crap then check out Engadget.com. It's a technology blog bought out by AOL. They review every other phone and they usually get their hands on the device before most other blogs.
i read engadget reviews, but i wanted your opinions as well. :)
i guess i can hold out for a while and just use my lg v phone
maybe wait for one of these?

Waiting for a Nokia N9.
i need to get a phone by tomorrow before
verizon switches to tiered data pricing
samsung charge? :/
ok, i just bought a blackberry storm 9530
it kinda sucks, but i got a unlimited data plan before they're no longer offered
new number! 805-705-1369
ok, fine, nny. i'm bidding on a motorola droid. i'll sell this crappy blackberry storm. thing sucks.

it's kinda old. i am literally waiting to dump mine... there's just so few verizon 4g options. and none with a physical keyboard.
i've also been holding out for a physical keyboard. the recent ones have sucked so much.

Fuck no it is not. Atrix sucks major dick. And before any of you people say it doesn't, I OWN one. I've used it for my work phone for the last 4 months. NOT cool.
nny, all i want is a decent phone that can run google voice, google maps, and gmail. this bb storm is unbearable--the on-screen keyboard sucks, i can't get the os to update, and i can't get google voice to download.
i also want to wait for a good 4g offering. in the meantime, i want a decent, cheap phone. it just has to have a reasonable keyboard and run the aforementioned apps.
what else should i consider instead of the droid for my stand-by?
DaGr8Gatzby

Verizon is mandatory due to unlimited data usage right?
yeah, and montana only has verizon and at&t
ok, i'm bidding on htc incredible phones now. they seem much better than the droid and don't cost too much more.
ok, i won
an auction for an htc incredible. i think it will definitely be an upgrade from this blackberry storm (what a turd of a phone).
I just saw gatz has an atrix in the Dreams thread, any opinions on it?

broke my nexus one screen for the second time. this time it's not just cracked; the touch functionality is broken too. so I bought a g1 from a coworker for $20 and put cyanogenmod 6 (android 2.2) on it. it works quite well and I dig the hardware keyboard.
i miss having a hardware keyboard so much that i miss my blackberry bold phone!
also, i don't like cyanogenmod all that much. i experience software crashes regularly.

cm7 crashed and rebooted my nexus one at least once a day, but I haven't experienced anything like this on the g1 with cm6.
thoughts on the
motorola droid 4 ?
i currently have the htc incredible (rooted for free wifi hot-spot).
i want:
(a) solid security features
(b) a physical keyboard
(c) less ui lag (faster processor or more ram would help, i'd guess)
(d) free wifi hot-spot
recommendations?
yeah, my next smartphone will have a physical keyboard.

I've found myself able to touch type fairly well on the soft keyboard in landscape mode. if I thought I could find a physical keyboard on par with the nokia e61's I might look though.

and I bought a nexus s. pretty much the same price as a new nexus one on ebay and mine keeps rebooting randomly (I've tested with different ROMs) which is getting annoying.
asemisldkfj

I keep reaching for the trackball that the nexus s doesn't have. Bigger screen means I can practically touch type though. And cyanogenmod has a setting that enables cursor motion with the volume rocker!
sounds pretty cool. cyanogenmod drives me crazy sometimes.

Cyanogenmod extended the usefulness of the G1 you sold me, asemi... til the battery swelled up and just destroyed it.

that's too bad :[. I was using cyanogen on a g1 for a while too! I tried a 2.3 rom for a while too but it became unbearably slow.
Just ordered a Nokia N9, after I (unsuccessfully) spent two days trying to mount a SMB or NFS filesystem on my Android phone. It ended wth 9.8M/s squared. My conclusion is that Android is a piece of shit and definitely *not* open, it's about as un-UNIX like as you can get.
Since iOS also sucks, there are very few options left for smartphones ... I also considered getting a HP Pre 3, but they're pretty expensive on eBay ...

I already have an N9. The hardware is pretty slow, but other than that, it's a good phone. Nice antenna.
asemisldkfj

I've mounted Samba shares with ES File Explorer on Android with no problems.
I like the N9. The graphical interface is pretty good. I must admit many of the standard apps (email, etc.) are fairly basic, and the app store is pretty limited compared to Apple or Android ... But the device is a lot more powerful.
For example, I edited my /etc/resolv.conf to fix my DNS after mucking about with wireless connections, and I couldn't find an IRC client so I grabbed a simple perl script and executed that from the terminal.
The development environment/SDK also looks pretty OK. There are a few simple apps I'm missing ...

I think I'm going to drop 290 USD for a Nokia E6. my new job requires off-hours availability, and dealing with moderate amounts of email on a touchscreen sucks. plus the battery life of every android device I've ever owned has been shit.

asemisldkfj

symbian regularly ate shit while trying to do basic things like refresh my inbox, display emails, and navigate pretty basic websites.
I'm using my nexus one again with cyanogenmod 7.2. I got a new sim card from the t-mobile store earlier so hopefully no more random reboots.
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
also, never call t-mobile tech support. always go to the store. when I called re: the random reboots they wanted me to do a clean install, not sync it with my google account, remove the sd card, and install no apps for something like three days. it took me approximately four minutes to get a new sim card for free at the store and the guy gave me a solid handshake afterward.

I love calling T-Mobile support when getting data/MMS settings pushed ... they immediately transfer you to tech people who know what they're talking about.

is cm10 out yet, lucas? I still vote you try cm again. I hate jumping between xda-developers roms.
what do you use for backup? I've found go backup to be pretty seamless. the only drawback is that like once a week "go backup pro is released!" shows up in my notifications drawer. that might only happen when I update it, but I'm not sure.

The N900 is still one-of-a-kind (the N9 doesn't have a keyboard). I always keep a terminal with Vim open for notes.
When I connect it to my PC with the USB cable, it automatically joins the Ethernet bridge and is accessible from the Internet via SSH. Every hour, when all my machines get backed up, the phone does, too. It has rsync, so there's nothing special to do.

Did you preorder one?
i got a samsung galaxy s4 a few weeks ago. i nearly bricked it, while trying to replace the bootloader. i managed to reflash the whole thing while shitting bricks because i thought i destroyed an expensive phone.
anyway, now it's rooted, but no custom bootloader or rom. :/
asemisldkfj
the law is no protection
bummer. is it particularly difficult to replace the bootloader on it? I've never really come close to bricking an android phone.
well, most sources say it's not possible with the current cracks. but i tried anyway. it half worked. so i tried overwriting it with another bootloader, then it wouldn't boot past a sad-face image. but i managed to find the OTA Verizon ROM and flash it properly. not fun.
I installed Jolla's sailfish on my N9 today. Can't say I like it too much so far, it works like MeeGo, but weirder ... Perhaps I need to get used to it, but MeeGo was intuitive and worked well from the start ... :-/
Perhaps I will try FirefoxOS later ...

I've been using iOS :(. at least it has decent caldav/carddav support built in. it's always surprised me that android can't match it on this front.
