so i go to a state university. on all computers in the labs, there is always a vnc server running. any IT person can watch your screen whenever they wish. this really concerns me with privacy issues. i use school computers to do online banking, credit card transactions, etc. lucking passwords usually do not echo, but usually credit card information does.
thoughts? i'm thinking about writing some letters.
yeah, basically I wouldnt use public comps that have vnc on em.

Using VNC makes the configuration of the individual machines a breeze, e.g. "Take your fucking hands off the keyboard...and let me do it". As far as privacy on a public machine...this wasn't a concern until you saw the VNC server?
not usually.. i'd just go get a computer in the corner to do banking. but if bros ae copying my credit card info off the screen, then that was never really a concern before.
vnc isn't used for support purposes on this campus. they only run vnc servers in the labs that are also staffed by support techs.
i'm using altiris at work. it does everything from pushing images to computers to remote control/viewing. i'm not allowed to do this, and probably if i do i'd get sued. there's a legal line here where we don't cross. these rules come from the ALA (american library association) which also lets porn fall under free speech. so the next time you visit a library and some dude is looking at porn, unless there's a document of limitations provided by the library you could probably look at porn to the dismay of casual onlookers and your own shame when a kid walks by.

Technically you can view anything anyone is doing, but I highly doubt the monitor desktop usage unless an issue crops up. It would take a lot of network bandwidth to do that(depending on which version of VnC). Also, if they have gigabit ethernet or better, use the wireless network.
