currently,
okcupid is the only way to go (except for online communities that may contain a handful of great people, but they will likely be long distance).

we've seen information from oktrends
before. here's another:
online dating advice: exactly what to say in a first message.
some of the comments are great, too.

lol @ first ‘rule’. oh yeah, because we all know chicks HATE that badboy devil-may-care attitude. proper english, etiquette, impeccable grammar, and kowtowing chivalry really makes a girl wet!
protip: i have an ivy league degree, and let me tell you, I got more chicks into bed by talking about sex and cheetos than Marcel Proust and Feynman.
Ladies, you get the men that you deserve.

GO!

I've had like six separate profiles on this site. it's been almost invariably disappointing.

yeah it's somewhat useful in like nyc.... worthless in CA
though living in mtv isn't helping me any either =/

Buddy of mine spent his 4 day weekend with a girl he met on OkCupid. :O

Update!
They're still dating. It's cute.
i met two of my favorite people on okc.

I have had low luck on OKC in the west. I assume it is because of my profiles frailty.
well, it's largely a messy game.
okc is pretty terrible, and i quit that mess last fall. but this might be worth reading:

i am back on okc, we'll see how this goes.
you're single? last i remember, you got back together with your ex. but that was long ago, i suppose.
indeed i did -- we broke up last december.

being single sucks. online dating is a giant failboat.
well, first date is tomorrow. we'll see how this goes.
it actually went pretty well. she texted me today saying so, so that's something.
Neat ;)
Also, I second nny's post; the first part, in particular.

did you like her?
being single isn't that bad, or maybe I'm just used to it.
yeah, she was cool. by "went pretty well", we were both nervous as fuck, and got wasted, and ended up walking around and talking for 6 hours. my memory is a bit hazy of the details.
in any case, she texted and asked to meet up on the weekend, so we'll see how that goes (presumably we won't be as nervous).
cool.
yeah, i like being single most of the time. there are occasions when it's nice to have a significant other, though.
full steam ahead, it seems
round three friday night
so that went very well.
nice.
i wrote a reply to this thread yesterday (which included asking how it went), but at the same time i was working on rotating keys, passphrases, and certificates, and i knocked this site offline for a while.

I am glad for you, nestor! three is the most amount of times I've been out with anyone in recent memory. I got afternoon drunk yesterday though and logged into okcupid for the first time in like 4 months and sent a barrage of messages though, so hopefully something will come of that?
Not sure if drunk messages are the best messages ... But hey, what's there to lose?
Also: thanks you Lucas ;-)
In my case, drunk (or at least buzzed) messages are better, because realistically I then have enough courage to actually press send
Heh; I know what you mean. Perhaps they should be written when sober, and then booze up and send them ;)

buzzed is probably most accurate for when I composed/sent them.
while buzzed is also when i have the most fun browsing okc, regardless of messages.
carpet: no problem! i think we were kept pretty safe because i use passphrases on my keys. (indeed, if the server reboots, i need to login to the console and type in the passphrase!) i rely on my web server being secure for my personal uses as well, so it's very important to me to maintain security.
Somewhat inspired by Nestor's success, I also tried the online dating thing again. After messaging back and forth we made a date ... She never showed up :-/ Phone unreachable, haven't heard from her since (not that I would care, really). That was so awkward. I blame you Nestor!
(Also some good news though: I also met someone else last week, not through the online dating, just random, I asked her out, and we had a pretty good time. Second date is tonight...)

ha. online people are flaky. good luck tonight!!
sorry to hear about the flake, my advice is to go in with zero expectations (not just about them showing up, i also mean in terms of how close the person is to the profile). i'm 2/2 but i can only assume it's going to happen to me eventually.
well, that first girl, we saw each other about five times, but i wasn't really feeling it (for a few reasons).
went on two dates with a second.

obviously you should expand on "a few reasons."
Thanks Nestor. I didn't have a lot of expectations, other than that she would show up :-/ ah well, live and learn.
And yes, we want all the details ;-p
uhh, fake accent for one.
#2 is working out well so far (one month in, only had the chance to see her four times)

what kind of accent??? who does that!?
yeah, seriously

... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
My former-better-half used to put on a Scottish accent (she's worked with a family of Scots for years now) because guys would bend over backwards to get her stuff after hearing it. She even got a huge (~$2k) discount on her car because of it.
maybe karven is the clown in the photo on

That page scares me.
