... and let the Earth be silent after ye.
So, thanks to UH's bullshittery, one of the classes I'm ending up taking is photojournalism. I had a Minolta SLR, but gave it to a friend of mine who would use it a lot more than I ever would... so, over the summer break I need to buy a new camera.

What would ttf recommend? I'm looking for:

- 35mm (not digital)
- manual everything
- used (shouldn't be an issue)

My tax refund is due soon, so I can actually afford something a bit higher end. The most I'm willing to spend is around $300.

I'm leaning towards the Nikon F2A presuming I can find one around, though I doubt that should be that big of a problem.

Can you still buy film?

I think you can get a Nikon FE or a Canon AE-1 for about $100.

Who can't buy film? :-/

And it can be a bit more expensive, as there are TONS of used photo shops and coops in Houston where I could find beat-up expensive cameras for cheaper.

FE sounds good, andre ... I don't know why I've never thought of getting an AE-1, so I'll look into it as well.

Not gonna lie, I want a TLR again, but I'm not sure how well that'll work for a "photojournalism" course.

Dunno, I thought it would be even harder to find film now that Kodak is gone...

All I ever shot on was Fujifilm and Ilford anyway. And: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Br … 4291384683

The only 35mm all manual SLR I've shot was an FE, I think; with a 50 mm 1.4. That was pretty good. But yeah, any old Nikon SLR should be good for photojournalism, I think.

Is there any advantage of film vs. digital?

Personal preference & financials.

Financial reasoning:
If were going to be taking loads and loads of photos after the course, I might consider digital; but I'm not much of a photographer (I've never been one to stop doing something to photograph it) so the cost difference between a decent DSLR and a used 35mm SLR is just too much for me to consider it. That being said, I'm willing to spend more money than usual (hence the rather high price limit I have) solely because I will have the extra finances this time and for my personal preferences below. Though, in reality, I'll probably spend far, far less than my limit.

Personal preferences:
I always had more fun in the darkroom than in Photoshop. Plus the process involved in film is just more natural to me than digital, which always felt stale and boring.

Might try out the Kodak Tri-X film stock ... I always liked using their S8 Tri-X line (I'm a sucker for B&W grain sometimes) so I'm thinking it will transfer well to 35mm.

awesomeness!
I picked up a used Pentax dslr for dirt cheap w/ 2 lenses ($200can), and I picked up a 50mm prime for it for like $7. Pentax for the win, seriously.
