Any chisel-tip, temperature-controlled iron should do.

so does that exclude butane irons? they're not temperature-controlled, right?

Apparently, they can be: http://www.arcade-electronics.com/detail.aspx?ID=352

I have a hakko fx-888

probably way overkill for the rare soldering I do, but it's nice.

see also this thread where I ask dumb but important questions about purchasing a soldering iron.

soldering takes a $150 buy-in for a decent set-up?

Psh. A sponge and a $20 iron is all I ever saw anyone use.

hell you can do a lot with a 10 dollar iron. The only time i need my good iron is for smd work.

that's what i want to do. build circuit boards.

throughhole != smd both are on boards. for smd a shot plate is best. =O

I don't know either....

Gotta replace a battery in an SNES cartridge, so I'll be busting out my soldering iron again soon!

Through-hole. Components have thin metal legs that poke through holes in the circuit board:

SMD (surface-mount device). Components have have metal ends which are soldered onto the surface of the curcuit board:

With a board that only has SMD components on one side, you can put it on a hotplate, and pick and place components with tweezers:

A heat gun helps too. I fucked up an nvidia GTX 285 because of this. Doi :(
