thoughts on these ?

--

i'm thinking of getting rid of my powered monitors at home, and just having:

1. a pair of isolating IEMs (for noisy environments)
2. a pair of portable closed-ear headphones (for quiet environments)
3. a bluetooth, batery-powered boombox (for in the shower, while biking, or anywhere) [don't have]
4. a decent car stereo system [need to finish]

i think that covers all of my desires.

i could still use my squeezebox with the portable speakers by using a stereo-to-bluetooth transmitter like this !

... is there a high-end DAC with BT input?!

it seems difficult to find modern audio equipment that is not complete shit. I say find a pair of bookshelf speakers on craigslist or ebay made in the '60s or '70s that have surrounds in good condition and look into a similar amp/receiver.

my bookshelf speakers are way overpowered by a gigantic receiver so I can't really recommend anything space-saving in that category, unfortunately.

but I guess that really goes against the getting rid of a stationary audio setup at home thing.

I need something little for my room now that my nice stuff is set up in the living room. ideally it would look something like this

but I'll probably just buy something cheap and shitty at a thrift store and use a 1/8" to cassette thing.

the great things about speakers is the basic technology in a speaker hasn't radically shifted much. old speakers in solid condition should be as good as most new speakers.

most components for that matter (cd player and digital-analog converters not so much)... my amp is from the 70s

yeah. once i settle down and have more space, i'd get an older amp and speakers.

for now, i think i just want the simplicity of something contained in one box. or maybe i'll be sorely disappointed with it. sigh

this seems like a good reference. they have virtually every product listed!

i really hate this research process.

numark npm100 is an active all-in-one stereo monitor, professional, no wireless capability. i like the simplicity while still being high power. $120.

behringer behritone c5a are retro-styled active monitors. i don't think i'd want to run one mono[1]. a pair of them could look elegant on ends of a desk, but they'd be a pain to lug to the foot of my bed to watch the occasional movie. $100 ea.

krk rokit rp6g2 would be an ironic choice, following the death of one of my krk rp5g2 monitors and consequential hours of research into another system. but damn if this sale price isn't a good deal for great nearfield monitors. $120 ea.

i could get some mediocre 2.0 computer speakers (t12 or t20) that can offer stereo separation, a bluetooth connection (with apt-x), and a reasonable price tag. $70 or $120.

logitech ue mini boom is a cheap but decent portable wireless system. it would give me the most freedom, taking up minimal room on my desk, being moved to the patio or bedroom easily, or even going for a bike ride or beach time. the audio will probably underwhelm me, though. $90.

or i could get a nicer portable bluetooth system, like the sony srsbtx500 for $200 or the braven 850 for $220, but why not just get a cheaper bluetooth speaker that will suffice, then get another good system for typical home listening?

as much as i'd like some vintage passive monitors and a nice, little amp, i'm trying to simplify. reducing the number of components and cables is my goal. but i'd consider such a system if it were compact.

i think maybe i should get the logitech boombox thing for $90, and keep shop around more. the boombox thing would suffice for all of my purposes--i just won't be impressed. but that's ok, yeah? then eventually if i find something for home that's a bit better with audio, i'll still keep the boombox for the bathroom, kitchen, patio, beach, and so on. reasonable?

my working krk monitor sold for a nice amount of money, but the broken one did not. accordingly, i'd like something pretty soon.

[1] is there a hardware component that down-mixes rca stereo to rca mono, anyway?

i watch craigslist for amps and speakers, but there are people in this town that arbitrage craigslist, and beat everyone to deals. this is a big deal with so many estate sales in santa barbara. people deal junk here. it's absurd.

the result is that i can't find decent old speakers for under $150 on craigslist (or probably elsewhere, without a lot of time spent going to estate sales).

i've wasted many weekends looking for good deals on furniture, speakers, etc. not worth it, really. although estate sales are kinda fun, and driving around a beach town isn't the worst thing in the world.
