It's rather funny, since about 3 weeks ago I did some work on a google-reader-like app... It's not finished ofcourse and I doubt it'll ever be ...

there are tons of rss readers out there -- web and offline. i suspect the next 3 months will result in massive additional work being done given the potential market opening up.

It's been a few years, but when I tried a bunch, all of them either sucked or didn't do what I wanted to do. Writing a RSS reader that doesn't suck (for me) has been on `the list' for a long time ...

check out the old reader and feedly

The old reader requires me to sign in with Facebook, so that's obviously unacceptable.

Feedly requires Firefox, which I don't use. And even if I did use firefox: I don't want no stinkin' plugin

I am pretty bummed about this. tried setting up selfoss and ran into some stupid php error. have heard good things about tt-rss as well so I may try that.

do you think this is because they got bored with it? because they don't know how to monetize it?

i wonder what changed.

thanks carpet

lr > i think your second point is spot on. they didn't have a clear path to monetizing reader user data that wasn't materially different than how they monetize search.

newsblur looks kind of nice. I was hoping for something with a mobile-friendly web interface though, because storage is precious on my nexus one. I should probably try to set up selfoss again.

still haven't figured out the reader replacement. feedly or newsblur look like the best options.

I recently imported all my reader feeds into selfoss and unfortunately it didn't retain the hierarchy in any way, or maybe it's just not viewable. I can either view "tags" which correspond to the folders I had in reader, or "sources" which is just an alphabetical list of all feeds. not being able to dig down to a specific feed via folders or tags is super annoying.

so I guess I haven't completely figured it out either.

yeah. i need to find one that has a sharing feature. i had a great group of people that i shared with back in the old days, and i've been tasked to find a replacement reader with that feature because i'm apparently the most tech savvy.

Finally got around to finishing this:
https://bitbucket.org/Carpetsmoker/frederick

I tried selfoss and tiny-tiny-rss (ttr), but I couldn't get either to run error-free :-/ With selfoss I couldn't even figure out how to add feeds (?)

(Disclaimer: I only tested this with two different feeds).

You need to access /cgi-bin/index.py, not /tpl/ ... In addition, this morning I discovered that serve.py only works with Python 3... while index.py only works with Python 2,,, hah :-/

I want to delete my entire Google account before the year's out, but I'm worried about what it will do to my lone project on Google Code. I should have used Github >:/.

I do have an android phone. I made a google account that's like 290rieofsdi0@gmail.com or something, solely for the play store.
