looks like windows xp support ends on 8 april 2014.

i don't think i like any newer versions of windows. i was on windows 7 recently, and yet again the file system (or explorer, i don't know which) seemed unstable to me.

sigh. what to do?

Run Linux? BSD?

Windows 7 works okay, sort of... It's Windows, so my expectations were never high.
I agree the filemanager is worse than in 2000/XP.

windows 7 pro has been solid as hell on my thinkpad. it blows my mind that anyone still prefers xp. I guess I'd run linux if you hate w7 that much. hell I'd probably run linux if it wasn't for work stuff.

i love blowing minds with my existence

i need to run windows for app/driver support. :/ i just feel like windows is getting worse. thinkpads are getting worse, too--i'm very disappointed in the x230 chiclet keyboard.

maybe the answer is the Apple Macintosh Notebook Professional with Operating System X version Mavericks.

meh. I don't really think the mbp or any other apple laptop is much better than the new thinkpads hardware-wise. os x is certainly nice though. windows got much better at least from a manageability standpoint from xp->7, and maybe even from 7->8, though the UI changes kind of make that moot in the latter case. all I need is a battery that doesn't cause my thinkpad to randomly shut down and I'll be sitting pretty for a while longer.

I actually worked on a OSX machine for the last few days; can't say I was too happy with it...

asemi: why do you think the mpb isn't any better than the new thinkpads?

carpet: why weren't you happy with it?

I dunno. what makes it better to you? the display has an absurdly high resolution but that's all I can think that it's got on a thinkpad. I think I'd still take a thinkpad, mostly for the relative ease of repair. I'll probably end up ditching laptops altogether and using a desktop with a usb ultranav keyboard.

Well, everything works different, from what I'm used to. This is not *bad* as such, but many of the changes are trivial/unimportant.
It's also not *really* fundamentally different from Windows, as far as I've been able to see. It's very Window & mouse-driven.

I did like the calculator, though. I does proper operator precedence (ie. 5+5*5 is 30, not 50 as in Windows), and it supports RPN. :-)

that sounds about right. the keyboard shortcuts (as basic as they are) in windows 7 are pretty great (windows+arrow keys, mostly). with autohotkey (for basic things like minimizing a window), it's even a pleasure to use. I think os x has a better built-in way to map keyboard shortcuts to useful window management functions. the grass is always greener, etc. I don't want to worry about my desktop/workstation/main operating system anymore, that's what virtualization is for. all those years trying to get flash working on bsd...
