I have finally escaped the help desk and am a network engineer at a rapidly growing company. I'm supposed to be in charge of the enterprise network but we're so strapped for people that I'm going to be doing managed firewall solutions for customers as well. fun times.

dating a new girl, finally, only 3 months in but seems to be working pretty well. second year med school. thoughtful, challenging, creative.

Met my girlfriend a few months ago, she's from the UK and was (temporarily) doing an internship in the Netherlands, she moved back to the UK to finish her last year of uni, so that sort of sucks.
We're going on holiday in a few hours, first I go to the UK to meet her and we spend a week there, and then we go to Italy for a week...
I'm *not* looking forward to the whole long distance relationship thing, we spent 2 weeks apart and that already sucked :-/
It's good for my English though :) It's funny how many common words I don't/didn't know (like food ingredients and stuff)...

asemi: Now that you live alone, do you feel lonely very often? My biggest issue with living alone is that I'm an academic, so I basically don't see people. I'd absolutely love living alone if it didn't make me a hermit, so instead living alone is bittersweet for me.
bluet: Have any pictures of the motorcycle? That's cool that you're visiting Manhattan. I'd like to, but it seems pretty expensive. What are you looking forward to there?

I'm recovering from another surgery right now. I'm going to Berkeley Wed-Fri this week for a conference. Then on Saturday I get the keys to my own one-bedroom apartment in family housing on campus. I landed it with a disability petition. The rent on my last place was $1400--this place will only be $900. So I might not have to take out much student debt anymore. We'll see how well I tolerate living in the midst of a bunch of families with children, though. I have a week to get moved in, but I can't lift more than ten pounds due to the surgery. :/
Then I have another surgery around Halloween. But THEN I should have my colon back in use! I can't believe that an intestinal leak (a) almost killed me in the operating room, (b) required THREE surgeries to correct, and (c) was a 12 month long process to correct. I'm so over it.

As for updates: moved to Mozambique Jan 2014, got married (Lucas was there), moved back to US Dec 2014, now living in Maryland. Glad to have ttf back in action.

i think we had a conversation about publicly displaying IPs, and decided it was acceptable. are uncomfortable with it, and if so, why?

Maybe I joined a Barbie forum and don't want everyone to know that I like to play with Barbie dolls. Or maybe I'm struggling with alcoholism and joined an online alcoholism support group.
Now it's easy for me to be fairly anonymous: just use a different username, but if all sites just posted IP addresses like ttf it would be very easy for anyone to string together everyone's online activities and publish them. And remember: once on the internet, always on the internet.
In the case of ttf I don't really mind, but as a general principle making IP addresses world-readable doesn't strike me as a particularly great idea.
