Many forums can become unruly. We should get together a solid set of rules that everyone can agree upon. I don't like highly censored forums or childish moderators with ego trips. My main concern is keeping the forums at a decent quality level for people to enjoy. The basic rules about being vulgar to people should apply.

This method should be democratic so I hope everyone posts.

I'm going to post a bunch of different forums' rules sets and we should weed through them to get the stuff we absolutely need, and get rid of the stuff we do not.

This process of using other forum rules as a guideline is just so we can get an idea about how forums manage larger volumes of users. Props to all the forums listed.

Read First: Volconvo's Rules

What does Volconvo mean? The name is a combination of the words volcano and conversation meant to imply heated discussion.

This site's main objective: To promote constructive debate between people with contrasting ideologies. People often think that the name implies violent debate. This is not true. The debate is "heated" because of the provocative issues and the contrast of the opinions present. This is a not a forum for insults, spam, etc.

Rules that make the objective possible

Help us enforce the rules: Report any posts that you feel violate the below rules via the button within the problematic post.

* Do not threaten other users: Any threats on a person's life, physical injury, etc will not be tolerated. Your IP address is recorded each time you post, and will be surrendered to law enforcement if necessary.

* No personal insults or attacks in the main forums: Insulting fellow users and getting too personal only de-rails good topics. This rule includes the use of images or text-based signatures that mean to insult or attack.

* Respect other opinions: If a topic does not interest you just avoid it and post in another topic. Contributing to a topic to dismiss the very discussion of it will not be tolerated.

* No spam: Users will be banned if they use the site to advertise another site/cause and it is obvious that they are not genuinely here to debate.

* No excessive profanity: Try to keep the topics as clean as possible.

* Do not paste full-articles: Post an excerpt and the link, or just the link and some personal opinions that you have in regards to the article.

* No profane images: Do not post any images that are disgusting (dead-fetus's, corpse's, your mother, etc)

* No Misleading Titles: Titles intended to instigate or trick users will not be tolerated.

please follow these simple rules while perusing the Cheapskates forum:

1 - only post deals within this forum. if you are asking for a price check, requesting an item, please post them within the Global I Need Something Thread.
2 - if you have an issue with a retailer, you may post about it in our Retailer Forum.
3 - we allow posting of coupon codes, pricematch+rebate tricks and other legal ways to get a good deal. DO NOT post a request to try and rip off a retailer either online or offline.
4 - NO multi level marketing, period.
5 - no self promotion! This can include personal owned retail sites or auctions links (unless it's a GT special only Big Grin)
6 - Auction site links are NOT considered Hot Deals. Do not bother posting them.
7 - if you don't like the thread, dont bother replying. no need to thread crap.
8 - No links to contests.
9 - and lastly, think before you post. if you think the poster is trying to promote his own store, let people know about it. the GTF community will thank you for it.

simple rules, follow them and you'll have a great time here. thanks.

http://forum.thinkpads.com

1. The primary purpose of this Forum is to act as an educational forum for the exchange of information for all things Thinkpad. All are encouraged to participate in this information exchange in the spirit of openness and fun. Keeping this place a comfortable and enjoyable place on the Internet to spend your time is strongly encouraged. Emotional outbursts and personal attacks are not.

2. Do not post links, model availability, or pricing information from sites that restrict their purchasing to specific narrow groups (e.g. EPP [employee purchase] or specific Education sites). The members of these institutions can find their information through their employer or organization. Posting the links or information without prior permission from Lenovo/IBM is of questionable legality. Those that are entitled to these discounts have no problem finding the site directly from Lenovo/IBM, their employee friend, or their school bookstore.

3. Don't ask how to get an EPP (Employee Purchase) or Educational Discount. If you are a member of one of these groups, ask them: they will know better. Questions about the Thinkpad are welcome. Questions about the the specific purchasing program itself should be directed toward your qualifying organization.

4. IF you must add a photograph to your post, PLEASE limit the size to 50k or less and place a warning in the subject line.

5. ATTRIBUTIONS: Portions of these rules were given to us to use by ArsTechnica (http://www.arstechnica.com) and other portions were done by Leon.

Cardinal Rules
screw-up here and you COULD be banned..

1. The Registration Agreement Terms must be respected in full. If you need to refresh your memory, you can see the agreement here http://www.thinkpads.com/registration_agreement.htm

2. No trolling. Don't make posts that are inflammatory just to get people riled up. Substance is a key to not being labeled a troll, but substance alone cannot prevent you from being considered a troll. Substance with a dash of personal attacks will get you labeled as a troll.

3. Ad hominem and personal attacks are not permitted. Criticize the ideas, not the people. An ad hominem attack is a logical fallacy describing the attempt to discredit an argument by merely attacking the credibility of the arguer. Excessive flaming will not be tolerated. Users who verbally assault the character or person of other posters on a regular basis will be banned. Moderator's judgment applies here. "You are wrong" is not a personal attack; "You wrong because you are an idiot" is.

4. No pornographic, sexually offensive, sexually explicit, or objectifying material. Moderator's judgment applies here. We'd like for our readers to be able to read the forum at work and share with friends without fear of retribution.

5. Do not post links or requests for warez.

6. Respect the privacy of others. Do not post other's phone numbers, addresses, pictures, etc., without their express permission.

7. Each forum member may maintain only one account.

8. Each forum member must maintain e-mail. All users must provide a current, frequently read e-mail address in his/her internal profile. Note that non-moderators do not have access to your internal e-mail address (which is separate from "Display e-mail").

9. Do not place foul language in thread subjects.

10. No spamming. No commercial-oriented posts. The “For Sale/Want to buy conference is for NON COMMERCIAL sale of used ThinkPads and accessories. Do not flood the conferences with useless content or content designed to engage readers into forum wars or trolling.

11. DO NOT attempt to subvert, modify, or disrupt the normal flow or display of the Open Forum or its content.

Compulsory Rules
screw-up here and we might cut you some slack..

1. Use descriptive subject lines and research your post. This reduces the chances of double-posting, and it also makes it easier for people to see what they do/don't want to read. Also, scan the subjects of the last several days' posts to make sure you aren't duplicating posts. Trim your quotes using only enough of the previous message to identify it.

2. Post in the right forum! If it's about the X Series, post it in the X Series forum. Even if it's only humor, an observation, or angst, if it's about something that we have a forum for, post it there.

3. Restrict the use of excessive foul language. Although we don't really care if people cuss (we have been known to cuss ourselves now and again), excessive foul language is likely to get moderated, if only because excessive foul language usually indicates that someone is utterly clueless.

4. No blatantly juvenile toilet humor. Moderator's judgment applies here.

here's what i think would make a good set of rules:

1. spam
no spam.

2. liability
each user is individually responsible and legally liable for what he or she publishes on this website. if a user publishes copyrighted or illegal material, the user in question is to be held liable, not think tank forums. all material posted on ttf is copyright its respective author, all rights reserved.
