i just went through my box of old manuals, and i saw my reciept/warranty for my headphones--i have sony's mdr-7506. i have had them for four years now, with no noticable wear. also, for three years i DJed at least 12 almost every week. i think there is a reason why many audio professionals only use sony.
the 7506 still costs around $100, it seems that you can get other (better?) sony models for cheaper.

I prefer Grado (http://www.gradolabs.com/product_pages/sr80.htm) headphones, personally. Now I can finally afford some! Though, to be fair, the SR series clocks in at around $100. I just now have the money to do that.
Anyway, larz, congrats on your headphones not sucking and dying.
I've been happy with my Gemini headphones. It's sometimes hard to find a place that carries them though.

i'm looking at in-ear (or earbud) headphones for under $100:
etymotic research er6i
shure e2c
sennheiser cx300
it's kinda hard finding out much about the response of these--some people say that the er6i has really light bass while others say it's pretty heavy. either way they are supposed to be a great set of headphones (and they are $68 on amazon.com!)
add the v-moda vibe iem to that list.

I recently picked up some Sennhesier HD-580s from Amazon for $130. a pretty sweet deal, or so it seems. I'm lovin' 'em for my home listening. I've got a pair of Sennheiser PX-100s for portable needs. they sound great but leak sound like crazy and aren't so hot in noisy environments like the subway.

also, if you didn't know about it,
headphone.com is a great website for headphones.
head-fi.org forums rules too.
haha.. those were my two sources, in fact.

grado headphones fall apart. but the factory is in brooklyn just walk in and drop em off to get fixed =P
so apparently there are 1st gen and 2nd gen v-mode vibes. the 1st is very nice, the 2nd is poor.
i'm going to go with the...
etymotic research er-6i! $70 on amazon.
i was thinking about getting the etys when i lost my original e2cs but i found out the cables are really thin with flimsy connection to the drivers, so i went with the e2cs again
i just read some bad reviews on the e2c... but i've read bad reviews on the er-6i as well.
it's so hard to decide.
