I read that Amarok is nice.

mp3blaster is nice, as is mpg123 for playing just a few songs at a time (or loading up a playlist and shuffling everything--it's like the iPod Shuffle of software players.
On Windows I use RealPlayer because it's installed and I have the RAM to spare. And it's my company machine so I can't install anything better.

Amarok was great except that it had some trouble playing the FLAC files I had at the time. it was also pretty heavy on memory, IIRC. or at least it felt like it; it was kind of sluggish sometimes.
I use iTunes on OS X. I don't like how it implements library-based management, or the default setting of organizing your MP3s for you, but if you tweak the preferences a little bit to turn all of the crap off, it's not half bad. I like the layout of artist:album boxes up top and a list of songs down the bottom.
as for hardware, I have an MP3 CD player that I use all the time, but not typically with MP3 CDs. if I had the money I'd research it a lot more and maybe drop a few hundred on a hard drive based player. I doubt I'll have the extra money for that anytime soon though.

Oh, yeah, for on-the-go I have an iPod Nano. Given to me as a gift(!). I never would have bought one otherwise. It's a fine player, but the price is faaaaar to high for my liking. One good thing about Apple is their customer support. Mine didn't work when I got it and they sent out a box and was there the following day--and I placed the request at 10PM! I shipped it out promptly and got it back in about 4 business days. Excellent.

ipod 60 gig, for me it's worth every penny. i took the face off my cd player 6 months ago and haven't put it on since. also it's a wonderful thing to have during labs and tests.

I have been tempted more and more by the 80gig iPod. I know the price is steep (~$360), but damn is it slick. It has four times the storage of my current mp3 player and the battery lasts longer. My Archos (bless it) might be on the last legs of life anyway, since the battery dies and I cannot order a replacement.
the creative is better, i think. it has better codec support and it has an adapter for composite outputs. oh, and it's not apple stuffs

that looks pretty nice, lucas. I've taken to buying a lot more CDs lately, so I'm perfectly content carrying around a portable CD player. I've even started deleting MP3s of stuff that I own the CD of.
I'm gonna invest some money in new headphones pretty soon. probably some Sennheiser PX100s.

also, I guess if anyone cares or is interested, my portable CD player is a Sony D-NE300. it's gotten some pretty great reviews on head-fi.org, and it's really cheap! I kind of got lucky, I guess. I think I paid 30 or 40 USD for it at a Sony outlet near me. I'm not sure how much they go for on eBay or anywhere else online, but if you're looking for an MP3 CD player or just a plain old CD player, it's a great deal.
software: amarok
hardware: 3g ipod 15gb, my thinkpad
ipod was given as a gift, although i think i would have bought one. imho, they aren't overpriced for the function you get out of them. no question, ipod saved apple.
asemi, thanks. I think I'm going to take your advice and buy some used cds on amazon, get that cd player and use up the rest of my cd-r's on mp3 rips.
my ipod is alright, got it as a gift, it's a mini but the battery isn't that great.
I'd like the cd player so I can leave cheap stuff in my car!

nice! used CDs on Amazon are great. that's where I get almost all of mine. have you looked at the prices for the CD player yet?
not just yet :)
the one on amazon is around 70.
I'm having second thoughts about this idea. I would like some better car stereo speakers to use this cd player with. hmm.. the back two 6x9's are blown, the front ones aren't blown but aren't great. I'm shopping for a set of speakers now. I also don't want to pay all these people s&h for each separate used item. Maybe I can buy from the same sellers.

I try to do that as often as I can to save on shipping. the cost of the used/new CDs not sold by Amazon plus shipping is usually cheaper than the price you pay Amazon for a new copy, though.

also, I'm not listening to MP3s as much anymore. I got a really nice pair of headphones (Sennheiser HD-580) and a stereo receiver. I've been plugging my portable CD player into it for now until I get a real CD changer. it's pretty sweet.

the 80gb ipod at costco is only $240 (store.apple.com sells it for $250). but i guess if i buy it from costco, i can't get "larz in charge" engraved on the back of it for free.

I got a refurbished Creative Zen Touch for 90 USD a few months ago :).
it's a little bulkier than an iPod, but it was totally worth it.
still buying CDs too.
I'd like to set up my stereo a little better. it's not in a spot that's very conducive to listening right now and that sucks. I want to get a bigger desk that can fit my CD changer and stereo on it so I can listen conveniently will sitting at a desk.

I'm looking to get a Zen or something for my on-the-go needs. iPod and it's bitchiness is annoying.

1. you can play doom on an ipod?
2. why don't i have one?

yeah, you need rockbox though.

Yeah. I put rockbox on my iPod a while back (still rocking it!). It's just a port of prboom. It ... rocks? (Actually, it's kind of annoying.)
iriver h10 with rockbox, mpd
they mostly play flac, by the way :)
here is my dilemma.
ipod 5g 80gb, standard firmware.
i have a pretty solid cd collection (mostly hip-hop) but lately my money is going towards other habits and i'm downloading a lot of torrents & blogged albums, a lot of indie rock and acoustic stuff.
so i have all sorts of random artists that i am fairly unfamiliar with on my ipod. i sort my music by the week that i get it e.g. right now i am on Feb 10-17 playlist.
however the way that the ipod shows the music in the playlist (just the song title) i have no clue how to interpret the songs.
i like listening to music in itunes because i can easily see the artist, album, genre, date added, etc. but i don't listen to music on my computer when i work, only when i'm walking around/doing non-intelectually demanding things (e.g. cooking, eating, cleaning, shaving, reading non-school material). so most of the time i listen to music when i walk to school on my ipod.
basically: does rockbox allow you to view artist, etc while scrolling through music? or are there any other solutions that can help me with this?

I wrote a perl script... to bulk rename the album and band names in the id3 tags. so I could "create" albums and dump them into the ipod as an album.
Works for me. And was pretty easy.

interesting, thanks! i'll have to think about this.
in the meantime i made a smart playlist that had songs over 1 minutes, no plays, and with less than 3 skips. lots of listening to do right there.

it seems like no one but apple makes high-capacity hdd-based players anymore. I bought an ipod classic today. I had a mini modded with a 32 gb cf card in it, but I kind of broke it when taking it apart to use it as a cf card reader, plus 32 gb is getting to be too small for me.
there unfortunately isn't really a good alternative to itunes on os x, and not having a sync option when using rockbox kind of kills that for me. I used to use rsync to do it but that's just kind of a pain, so itunes it is.
also, I'm getting rid of my 5-disc cd changer.

also, I realized that until they seriously improve the batteries on smartphones, I don't think I will be able to use one as a portable music player. not that I really wanted to anyway at this point.
I have an iPod Nano. I think the clickwheel is seriously hyped as a UI and it kind of sucks.
Other then that, it's not bad ... It survived my washing machine some time ago...

I got a creative zen. not bad, but not great though it suites my needs very well. the thing i love about it is i can run it for days and not need to charge it. hell, i think i went 2 weeks before i charged it on one run.
i have got a 2gb creative zen v plus that i have had for 2 years now. i was thinking about upgrading, but what would be the point? might as well wait for it to die.
oh and the battery is amazing. i have been using it steadily (avg 15 hours/week) for 2 years and the battery still holds enough juice to go 8-12 hours.

nexus one: crap sound quality, extra cyanogenmod features to boost volume :], realtime last.fm updating. ipod: good sound quality, syncing files from a network share (I should sync it directly with my file server) :[, no last.fm updates.
I'm going to give the ipod another go instead of listening to the same four albums I have on my phone over and over.
